Job Losses Due To Coronavirus

I work for Kingspan and all 14,500 employees have been told this week that we are all to take a 40% pay-cut due to the virus and "predicted" lock-downs/general downturn in orders.

Whilst this is going to be very difficult for myself (mortgage, bills, childcare costs etc) and many others in the business, it did make me think about all the other people out there who may have lost their job completely due to this and I suppose I should be grateful I still have a job and some (albeit reduced) money coming in.

Has the virus affected anyone else's jobs on here?

If you are going through anything similar or lost your job recently, please try to stay positive. It is awful right now and we are entering into uncharted territory but we will get through it, let's talk and help as many people out as possible.

I've still got to work, apparently I'm a key worker as a catering manager in a school, although I wasn't considered key to anything a few weeks ago and still 'not key worker' wages.
All those who used to consider shelf stackers, cleaners etc as menial roles should heed the lesson here, as opposed to the fiscal wizards who are paid brewsters for making sure the rich get richer and the poor poorer.
But Brenda is prepared to do her bit ;)

I had a mini meltdown in the other thread this morning when I found out all bar 3 of my department are getting laid off until the 20th of April.

In reality, however, it'll just mean taking holiday for 2 weeks then claiming the emergency Belgium dole which will fund me to 65% of my income until this blows over. I'm saving a fortune with the pubs being shut, anyway.

At least here we're covered for that 65% and there's talk of mortgage/rent holidays.

Best of luck to anybody struggling.

I would advise against going on reddit. The amount of pure doom merchants over there is off the charts. Anyone with even slight mental health problems will exacerbate it immensely.

That's actually a really good point. I'll ask the mods to remove the link. Doom and gloom is not what anyone needs right now.

Perhaps not the thread for it, or maybe it is. But a timely reminder of why a universal safety net in the form of the welfare state is such an asset. Unfortunately we've warped it to basically prop people up constantly, even when they have jobs in some instances. There's a serious debate to be had about jobs, employment rights and the welfare state after this is over.

I have past those years now but people with children must be out of their minds at the moment .I myself am in a comfortable position not monetarily as I get less than the state pension but we cook almost everything from scratch and that saves a lot also we have paid up the mortgage and soon I will be getting stuff we plant from the greenhouse .
If anyone who is laid off just goes to You tube ,there is a recipe for everything from basic ingredients ,it is one way to help your money go further and you have the time now .
Best wishes to all out there
We have been told not to leave home as a precaution and the neighbourhood has a system to get stuff to our door if we need it .
Hard times .

....whilst I accept the need for unprecedented action, the Government needs to ensure businesses remain open when they can and they don’t implement these closures for longer than needed.

The collateral from people losing income could be almost as significant as the impact of the virus.
Precisely Eggs. As much as we have to look out for ourselves and others from the illness itself we also have to think about the devestating impact it could have on the economy and, indeed, people's livelihoods.
