Jimmy Johnstone - the greatest player ever from Britain?

Aye, wee Jinky wid beat a man, turn about and beat him again and again.
How he was ever allowed to bring a whip onto the field of play God only knows.
But Glasgow was a dark and dangerous place in the 60s aye right enough.

Ask most people outside Scotland who the greatest ever Scottish player is and most would say Dalglish or Law. It’s complete ignorance (was guilty of it myself). It’s solely because they played in England which gets far greater recognition. Both those players were world class but there’s a level above that where George Best sits, as should Johnstone.

From 2:50 minutes onwards (second half vs Real Madrid at the Bernebeu in 1967). He’s on another level. Like a child at the circus the Madrid fans are spellbound at what he’s doing.

Tommy Gemmel had some first half in that as well.

I say Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) as George Best being from Northern Ireland I think he’s the most gifted from the UK/Ireland. Jimmy Johnstone I’ve only quite recently discovered. His ability is stunning. He did things that are Messi-esque. The close ball control, the effortless ability to glide past people with a drop of the shoulder (left or right). He verged on piss taking it’s comical. Watched this yesterday and found myself laughing at the stuff he was doing. I find it hard to think of a more gifted player from Britain.

My initial thoughts about Jinky take me to that World Club Championship game against the Argentine champions. A right dirty game when he went chasing some guy that tried to break his ankle.

He would probably be one of the most valuable players in the game if he was brought up in a modern academy. Unbelievable talent.

The fact he was the best player in the first British team to win the European Cup should make people realise how good he was.
