JFK

My turn. JFK was killed by the ex-Marine and Communist (big C, not little c) Lee Harvey Oswald. All the magic bullet stuff is a bunch of hooey. Get over it.

It was the first great national television event of the modern era. America bonded and watched for the next three days nonstop - all of us sat there and watched, together, as a nation. It was the very definition of tragedy, and it was happening live in front of our eyes. From that point forward, Kennedy was some kind of cross between a President and a deity in the culture of most of this country. The media hasn't loved and backed any President like that, until our current occupant arrived in 2009.

I came home from church the next Sunday to see Oswald gunned down on live TV. Some claimed the country was coming apart, and the events of the next sixteen or seventeen years is evidence they weren't far wrong. We won't get a true perspective on those times until all that were alive then are gone. It was a different world.

Wow Murica!

Check the facts out for yourself. The head shot did not come from the same rifle as the first two shots.

In the UK of 1963 public's perception he was seen as the great white hope with a dash of Diana celeb, but what did we know back then. We didn't hear a tenth of the 'bad stuff ' we do now.

Mark him down as good but not as good as the every-joe in the street thought he was

Had potential, but the thing with potential is...well until you do something, it's not worth much really ( see rodwell )

In music terms was he;

A pre '58 Elvis....fast forward to death on the crapper
or
Buddy Holly, short but sweet...how would he evloved we'll never know

In footballing terms was he;

Duncan Edwards, cut off even before he reached his prime.
Or

George Best, all the talent in the world, but effectively finished at 25-26, fast forward to killing himself and his new liver in jig time.

Given the truth or the legend...If in doubt

Print the Legend.

I know 2 things though;

i) at the Mins silence at Goodison the next home game, some one, in the park end or down that end, shouted, Up Khruschev and was pounced on by irate fans.

ii) If it was Khruschev who was shot and not JFK, Onassis would NOT have married the Other Mrs K

Is Tom Knox your Mom's cousin? I've done his Sea Songs - really nice piece from back in the 80's. Terrific writer and arranger - I'd have loved to study with him.

That's him! Small world isn't it? I remember sitting in his living room in Florida many times talking about music and history. Late 80's. He and I shared a love of history, although he was much more into British history of the Elizabethan and English Civil war period. It's funny how growing up he's just your relative, but then after he died I found out how truly remarkable a composer and arranger he was. And we were pretty close. But back then he was just cousin Tom who enjoyed having me come over and stay to drink and talk history and tell family stories.

I wish he was still alive so I could tell him you admired him. It makes my day that you know him actually.

I remember a few years ago reading a newspaper report from the Liverpool Echo archives about Everton's next game after JFK was assassinated. The club held a minutes silence on the occasion but it was broken by a member of the Merseyside Communist Party shouting "Long Live Khruschev!!".

Strange days.
