My mother's first cousin was a career Marine and musician. He eventually became chief composer and arranger for the United States Marine Band for 16 years (he's actually very famous in those circles. His composition "God of Our Fathers" -- variations on a Methodist hymn tune of that name -- was commissioned for President Ronald Reagan's first inauguration in 1981. The piece has been played at every subsequent presidential inauguration, and it closed a congressional prayer vigil service in the Capitol Rotunda the day after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.Similarly, "And Grace Shall Lead Me Home," was featured at a memorial concert in Oklahoma City honoring the victims of the federal building bombing there. "American Pageant," was commissioned for President Richard Nixon's first inauguration".
Anyway, in 1963 he was just a young marine in the Marine Band and they led the funeral processional at the request of Jackie Kennedy. You can see the footage here:
The Marine Band wore the crimson jackets. He's in there somewhere (he was trumpet player so if you see the trumpet line, he's in that). I remember him telling me stories. Fascinating to have a family member that close to history. Like just about everyone else of that generation, he could never get through talking about John Jr. saluting his father without breaking into tears. And this is a Marine we're talking about.
Second tidbit, is my father's uncle was a really good charcoal sketch artist. Not a professional, but a damn good amateur. He used to draw pictures of famous people, and then send them off to get autographed if possible. He drew one of JFK and sent it off to the White House, only to have it returned. I have it in my house. Pics below. Check out the date it was received into the White House.
