Jail Sentence Lengths

Might help if they stopped putting people who are no threat to society, run their own legitimate business, pay their dues and hurt nobody in prison for daft stuff like growing a few ganja plants to sort them and their mates out...
Thought that kid who chucked the fire extinguisher was lucky they didn't try and do him for attempted murder to be quite honest and 5 years for the scumbag who assaulted the little girl and left her for dead is just risible. Sentencing seems pretty damn arbitrary at times.

How about people accept some personal responsibility and obey the laws of the land.

little bit same thing here in finland. sentences generally are too low (life in prison means rarely over 10 years). all the pedofiles should be hanged, gutted and then burned.

I'm looking for solutions, mate. The law is an ass in this instance. All putting someone like this in prison is doing is losing their tax revenue. I think someone running their own business and paying their taxes is responsible for themselves. No point in putting them in prison for doing something akin to making home brew, legal status aside.

I'd rather have somebody like that not go to prison at all than a rapist only get 2 years 'cos the prisons are too full.

To be fair though, the Misuse of Drugs act is one of the most arbitrary set of laws in existence. There really is now need in it, because drug use will continue regardless of how large a penalty you give it. To be honest legalisation is one of the more sensible moves, as it allows addicts to get a hold of purer drugs for cheaper (most of the really damaging effects are due to how the drug is split say putting washing up powder and whatever else in with it), and allows the taxman to make a nice amount from it. The scientific evidence says that marijuana is fairly harmless, much more harmless than alcohol and tobacco, yet they are leagal whereas marijuana isn't. Legalisation would also remove one method of funding from terrorist organisations and gangss and also would also lead to more addicts seeking help for their addiction, because there wouldn't be such a social stigma attached to it. As discussed above, we would also cut the amount of users in jail for this offence freeing up places for more serious offenders.

I studied Law, but it still bewilders me.

Here's the thing.

1 )

Bloke kidnaps a 10-year-old girl in a car, drives her miles away from her home, takes her into a woods, sexual assaults her, threatens to kill her then abandons her.

He gets 5 years or so in prison.

2 )

Bloke throws a fire extinguisher off a building, hits no one.

He gets 2 1/2 years in prison.

Is it just me or are jail sentences really, really out of whack with what should be happening? For me, the first one should be life, the second one should be a year tops!

First one, life?

DEATH, more like it..
Rape a 10 year old girl, and your punishment is to live your life being fed by tax payers?

I'm all for the death penalty in this case.

the pedo will serve 5 years maybe longer.its called IPP.indefinate public protection.he will probably serve 7.(although should be the death penalty).the "student" will serve 15 months maybe less because he can be let out with a tag with a quarter of the 15 months remaining.that will be a public order offence maybe affray or insighting a riot.i believe the pedo should be killed(LEGALY OR ILLEAGALY).the student got a fair sentence i think.and anybody that grows ganja should not be locked up.

Maybe some laws criminalise people who don't need to be criminalised.

Given that those who are jailed for the very minor offence of cultivating a crop which is illegal for no real reason (if marijuana is outlawed, tobacco certainly should be and alcohol too) are placed in a jail environment which makes it 100x more likely that they will escalate up the crime scale due to holding a criminal record, making it harder to get a job - hard drugs, theft etc. often follow.

The only reason marijuana is still illegal is because politicians are afraid to raise the thorny issue amongst the electorate as they fear it could backfire.

It's difficult to condone jail cells being full with these kind of people, when rapists etc. are given short sentences due to the overcrowding.
