The identity of Jack the Ripper has been revealed in a new book by author Russell Edwards.

Speaking on the Today programme, he explained that investigations revealed a number of details about the Victorian serial killer: "He was a Polish immigrant that came over to Whitechapel in 1881 with his family."

Dr Jari Louhelainen, a senior lecturer in Molecular Biology at Liverpool John Moores University, conducted some of the analysis that led to the identification.

He said that scientific techniques for examining DNA samples had only recently progressed to a level capable of solving the mystery adding that "only now, in the last ten years, would this have been possible."

According to a WORLD EXCLUSIVE at The Daily Mail, the mystery of Jack the Ripper's identity has been solved by businessman Russell Edwards and forensic expert Jari Louhelainen using DNA evidence. The alleged culprit? A 23-year old Polish barber and longtimer Ripper-suspect Aaron Kosminski.

You can read the lengthy, two-part piece (the first part written by Edwards, the second by Louhelainen) over at The Daily Mail. While there are plenty of criticisms to be made here, the three most important things to keep in mind right now are as follows:

  1. Wouldn't you know it, Edwards has a new book to promote. Naming Jack The Rippercomes out Tuesday, and is the latest in a long line of books that speculate on the identity of the infamous killer.
  2. Edwards and Louhelainen saw fit to announce their discovery to the world – a discovery based on a "DNA breakthrough" that Edwards describes as "innovative," "amazing," and "incredible" – not in the pages of a reputable, peer-reviewed scientific publication, but theDaily Mail.
  3. The discovery hinges on a 126-year-old, unwashed, blood-and-semen-soiled shawl said to have been recovered from the scene of one of Jack the Ripper's murders, though the shawl's actual provenance remains far from certain.
Right. Sure, this is fun and exciting, but take with salt and all that. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing these claims independently verified.

This is the most important counterpoint to me:
Edwards and Louhelainen saw fit to announce their discovery to the world – a discovery based on a "DNA breakthrough" that Edwards describes as "innovative," "amazing," and "incredible" – not in the pages of a reputable, peer-reviewed scientific publication, but theDaily Mail.

Hahaha. Good spot by Tramps_mate, I'll never think of Jack The Ripper the same again.
Liverpool
By the end of the 19th century the reported sightings of Spring-heeled Jack were moving towards the north west of England. Around 1888, in Everton, north Liverpool, he allegedly appeared on the rooftop of Saint Francis Xavier's Church in Salisbury Street. In 1904 there were reports of appearances in nearby William Henry Street.[23]
