In bizarre turn of events, the Hong Kong billionaire who had offered £40 million ($54.9 million) to any man who married his gay daughter has agreed to double his ‘marriage bounty’! Shipping magnate and property developer Cecil Chao Sze-tsung seems oblivious to the fact that his daughter Gigi is in fact already in a civil partnership with her female partner of almost nine years, Sean Eav. Chao had intended to pass control of his business empire over to his daughter but only if she would get married to ‘a man’, is now looking to hand over his business to his two other sons. While the money is big, Mr Chao’s sense of morality leaves much to be desired for. The 77-year-old has reportedly told the Malaysian newspaper Nanyang Siang Pau that he would consider doubling the money offered to HK $1billion after his first offer attracted 20,000 unsuccessful responses.
Ms Chao on her part seems unfazed about any inheritance or her father’s public antics and was quoted saying, “I don’t think my dad’s offering of any amount of money would be able to attract a man I would find attractive. I would be happy to befriend any man willing to donate huge amounts of money to my charity Faith in Love, provided they don’t mind that I already have a wife.
‘Third and lastly, thank you Daddy, I love you too.” Ms Chao, an executive director of luxury property development company Cheuk Nang, is also a LGBT activist and has become closely involved in Big Love Alliance, a gay rights group that lobbies the government to pass anti-discrimination legislation.
Mr Chao, in an interview previously said, his offer came after the bad publicity that followed when his daughter came out of the closet, and that ‘Hong Kong is horrible at accepting and welcoming diversity.’ How putting a marriage bounty on his daughter’s name could make things better for them, is beyond us!
