Friendships come, friendships go. But 55 years ago today, two young British men met, and it's not overstating things to say they changed the world.
Paul McCartney and John Lennon met for the first time on July 6, 1957, at the St. Peter Church Fete in Woolton, Liverpool, England. Lennon was playing in his band, the Quarry Men, and a mutual friend and sometimes bandmate, Ivan Vaughan, brought McCartney along and introduced the two.

A plaque on the exterior wall of the church, much-photographed by Beatles fans, tells the story of their meeting, and adds "As John recalled, 'that was the day, the day that I met Paul, that it started moving.'"
The church's cemetery is home to the gravestone that inspired "Eleanor Rigby."

You can watch one Beatles fan's tour of the church and cemetery from 2008 in this You Tube video.

I personally thought the Beatles were overrated, the only good song for me was 'Saw Her Standing There' but they put Liverpool on the map so i'll let them have that.

They definitely made a huge impact on music history and will be remembered forever.

Hahaha, i just don't get overwhelmed like, granted the whole world did. They do nothing for me. Mathew St is boss though

The Beatles rock DUDE!!!!!!!!

They defined music.

On a personal note I find them, out of the Beatles, to be utter bells.

Cant stand McCartney and Lennon was just a [Poor language removed] whipped little puppet, Ringo comes across as a bad bell, only George seemed a decent fella, RIP.

But as a group, The Beatles were awesome.

You had to be there. What they did was amazing. All ages of people from small kids (me) to parents and grandparents loved their songs. Not like today where there is a 'generation gap'. Some of their classics are still loved today, some 50 years later. How many of today's musicians will even be known in 50 years. They didnt change the world, that is far too overblown, but they did change music and for me Paul McCartney was the man who did it.....

George seemed like a proper decent fella, Ringo is a tit, Paul I don't mind, just wish he liked football more so he could of put money in Everton.

John was John

Agree with this tbh. Just watched the documentary about the show McCartney did right after 9/11 in NY...and he came off as...well an airhead, and a bit of a bell. I do find it amazing he and Linda stayed together for as long as they did, and apparently never spent a night apart during their entire marriage.

By contrast, I watched the documentary Scorcese did on George Harrison, and he just seemed like a prince of a fella.

I have a record that was George Harrisons personal copy of My Sweet Lord, signed by George himself, in my record collection. It will be worth a fortune one day........

Weren't they all evertonians bar ringo? I know Lennon and macca were at the 66 fa cup final

We did a thread on this a while back...it's all a bit grey. McCarntney admits to being an Evertonian because of his family, but admits he was more into music than football. Ringo is definitely a Red. Not sure Harrison cared much about footie, and don't think Lennon really did either.

I think there was a conscious decision on the part of the Beatles and their management not to publicly declare allegiances so as not to alienate any of their Merseyside fanbase in the early years.
