Is the World Cup rubbish?

I'm generally a fan on international tournaments and I support England, but the last one was absolutely dire. Think it had a lot to do with the constant buzz of the vuvuzela or whatever, and the half empty stadiums.

First World Cup I can properly remember is 1998, now that was a fantastic tournament. Owens goal, Ronaldo and De Baggios questionable hair cuts, Scotland V Brazil one of the opening games, school letting us watch the england games in the hall, playing Fifa road to world cup 98 on my Windows 95......how good life was then!

Think the Japan one and the Germany one were also fantastic. Filled with Drama aswell....how can anyone not enjoy Zidane's last moment as a footballer being him planting his skull into materazzi's chest!

You must be about the same age as me, as 98 was boss for all the same reasons! I was on a school trip in the south of France the week of the semis. Being in a little mountain town in the middle of bloody nowhere that started an impromptu party when France beat Croatia was just ridiculous! Remember our art teacher being a big sports fan, so she always found a telly somewhere and let us watch when the World Cup was on (or Wimbledon...I was never a tennis fan, but being allowed the privilege of not having to do work was always a welcome one!).

Remember with those early kick offs in 2002 as well, I remember a big group of us tried to break into the big metal TV cupboard in the German classroom at like 8 in the morning once to watch Uruguay play Senegal! 3-3 draw, it was worth it!

2006 was probably the one I enjoyed the most just for the football. Germany were suddenly this exciting team to watch, Australia were boss with Cahill playing for them, and Italy were ace. The win over Germany in the semi is still one of the best games Ive ever watched on TV.

I love the World Cup.

It forces Americans who don't want to have anything to do with football to begrudgingly acknowledge it for a few weeks every four years.
