Is the PS4 worth buying??

Got a PS4, barely use it. Game choice is shocking (that'd be the same for xb1). Fed up of walking into game ect to tell me what great games are available in 6 months from now.. What's the point. Nice bit of kit, bluray player ect, but I'd honestly hang fire till better games are out

Didnt the PS3 run at a loss? i know the margins arent great per console sold. The winner at the end of the day will be the one who can win over the developers. Just like the ever ending battle google store vs apple store.

It did indeed - they sold at a loss to keep it relevant, hence the reason it didn't go under. Most consoles would have went under after the first three years of the war as Xbox 360 murdered them in sales and games, but Sony kept going, plowed money into it and kept it alive.

That's why I think Microsoft will have to do the same thing if the gap stays as it is through Christmas 2014, as if the PS4 outsells XB1 3 to 1 through the first major Christmas then developers will flood to PS4 unless Microsoft either buys exclusives with a boatload of cash (a la Tomb Raider) AND lowers the price point of the console itself.

Very much agree with you.

Xbox 360 handily in the early and mid point of the life cycle, but not by a wide margin towards the end of the lifespan of the system, due mainly to massive price cuts and system exclusives making gamers take the plunge on the PS3 late on.

But that isn't always the case in console wars - it sort of happened with SNES/Sega Mega Drive but history tells us that generally you have one dominant platform and that's that. If Sony weren't big enough to maintain it, the PS3 would have folded, but they kept putting money into it and kept it alive to the point it maintained relevance.

I think XB1 will be the same as PS3 if they make the same compromises - price drops to equal or go under the PS4, make a loss on the consoles in order to get it in peoples homes.

As far as sales go, wrong mate.

The Wii won that one (and where is Nintendo now when we speak of these console wars?? An overaged third tier player, on the sidelines who has still has the goods, but just can't keep up with the young 'uns)

The point is, while MS aren't winning, they certainly are not losing.

The actual goal of this exercise is to make the respective companies a big ol' pile of cash. And they are both on track to do just that. (Although it did look like if the PS4 wasn't a success, it could have been 'close up shop' from Sony.

Oh come on... the Wii doesn't count - it wasn't a traditional gaming console, it was a family entertainment system and a very good one at that. Most people disregard it when talking about the wars for good reason.

Yes, it sold massively, but the fact it has zero legacy in determining the consoles that came after it points out that it was an anomaly of its own making, not a console gaming landmark.

I love my ps4.

It's the best system I've ever owned.

Could I have waited to about 3/4s through this year to get it? Yeah. I probably should have.

But the catalogue of games is only going to get better and better.

I'd love one but have a 6yr old who gets frustrated on the Wii as it is. The wife would kick my arse as she finds it unbearable. But that said until the village gets at least fibre to the exchange playing mutli player etc wouldnt work. roll on 2016 :)

having used both dev kits i can safely say oculus is the single most overhyped product of my lifetime, its like going back several years due to the crap resolutions. yeh its kinda immersive but it's not THAT immersive cause all the games look like [Poor language removed] because of the lame resolution. when it gets proper 4k resolution support in a few years then it might be worth getting excited about but at the moment it's like taking a huge step back in image quality just for the sake of some gimmicky VR which isn't even that immersive.

the funniest thing of it all are the bogus overacted/faked 'first reaction' videos where people are like zomg its like totally mind-blowing, having sat down and used it with several mate some of whom aren't even knowledgable about gaming or VR and not one single person had a reaction even close to that.... it was generally 'meh its alright but the picture quality is awful'.

hype hype hype, unless it improves massively its going to flop flop flop

Correct.

That's how I see it too really. I don't think Oculus Rift will be anything substantial as is always the case with something that has so large a development cycle, but I think it's legacy will have a big impact on future gaming development. I don't think VR-only gaming will ever kick off, but I think a Kinect style accessory to a gaming centre will be where it goes in the future.
