That's a loaded question. Is religion:

(a) a cultural byproduct
(b) an evolutionary byproduct
(c) a systemic implementation of the morality and ethics of higher being(s)
(d) an independent construct not related to culture, biology, or supernaturality

It's a question open to interpretation.

Not necessarily asking if it's right or wrong - a person's faith is up to them - but is religion generally a good thing?

There are lots of ways of looking at it and I'm wondering what GOT comes up with.

In the dark ages up until the industrial revolution, Christianity in the west had the positive effect of helping to create a workable civilisation based on religious laws and morals, and acted as a vanguard in Europe against barbarians. So, good stuff there ;)

Today, the inoffensive religions where people keep their beliefs to themselves, like Church of England (cake making society), they're absolutely fine. I respect Buddhism as a way of life, even if you don't believe in the religious aspect.

It's the cultish ones that are shockingly out of step with the modern world and cause more problems than they solve.

I envy people who have faith. It must be a great source of strength in times of trouble.

Far too often though religion has caused terrible problems in the world.
