Is fourth gone?

Say fourth will be 72 points and there's 25 games left that leave us needing an average of 2.2 points a game.

I don't want to be pessimistic but that seems very high.

I know we technically aren't that many points off 4th but there's a lot of teams in between and overall it probably won't be too far away from 72. Even 68 points leaves us with needing 2.04.

To put that in context. Over a whole season a rate of 2.2 would leave us with a total of 83.6 and 2.04 would leave us with 77.52.

We've never come close to either in our history. We will need Arsenal and Utd to keep playing like crap and I just don't see that. Arsenal always turn it around and Utd are finding form plus have the money to sort it out.

I think 65 points would probably do it. We simply aren't playing well enough though - haven't been since about April.

There seems to be a lot of teams sitting in that 2nd-tier bracket right now. Arsenal, Spurs, Everton, Liverpool, Man Utd, plus West Ham, Newcastle and Southampton providing a bit of food for thought. Everyone is capable of beating everyone else.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it going down to the wire and 4th being taken by one of the lowest total points since we got 4th.

I'd be a bit embarrassed if we finished 4th to be honest. We've been shocking in more or less every game

Mathematically it is still on but I think there is a desperate aftertaste following the spineless capitulation yesterday which makes even the most optimistic among us feel we are actually going backwards after the breath of fresh air which was blowing through the club like a force X gale all last season.

I don't think we are going to finish above United or Arsenal now, I'm afraid.
