Hitler's favourite opera was Rienzi, Wagner's first early success as a composer and which tells the story of a medieval Roman cleric who gets selected as people's tribune, defends them against the nobility and then is betrayed and killed by an ungrateful mob. The teenage Hitler went to see it with a mate of his called August Kubizek, who described in a later book (called "My Friend Adolf") how his friend was transformed by the music into someone obsessed by the ideas the opera contained.

By 1945 there was only one original manuscript of the opera in existence, and that had been copied once. Both were destroyed in the last months of the war that Hitler started.
