There is a theory that cricket is a version of an old Irish games similar to hurling. A lot of cricket phrases which make no sense in English are very similar to Gaelic phrases.

Aussie Rules football still has the two outside posts that were in GAA in the early years, but no goal. The reason Rules is played on an oval pitch is because they used cricket stadia in the early days.

Given how closely interlinked the 2 islands, off the coast of Western Europe, have been for the last how many centuries I would not be surprised at all.

The theory is that Irish conscripts to the British army brought the skills and terms of a hurling type game called catty to a gane that was being played by British Officers. This morphed into modern cricket as it is played today.

Its just a theory but probably has some merit
