Ireland's first bit of austerity has been met with mass protest. I'm talking of the implementation of the irish water charges. TD's have been involved in scuffles, watermeter installers have been in brawls with the protesting neighbourhoods. They are forcing Ireland to pay but it looks like it's the start of end of this act of austerity.
Gardai (police) have being standing in a line to protect water meter installers.
The country Is up in arms. This is looking like a victory against austerity for Ireland.
My phone is acting up and I am having trouble with putting links up but youtube is filled everyday with video footage of conflict and some violence and other stuff. Many smart phone videos of these protests and scum bag garda turning making Ireland look like a facist state.
Maybe some irish Evertonians can stick up some media about it in comments. Very interesting stuff.

This is fantastic an Irish man.makes a speech about police state. And ten Gardai walk away ashamed. Very powerful this.

Sorry for ignorance here.

So people are protesting because they are going to have to pay for government supplies water?

The government are trying to charge us for our water we get on tap. The bankers and capitalists have placed Ireland and Europe in austerity. Austerity is like a agreed legislation by the people in power in Europe the working class has to foot the bill for the bankers "mistakes" through taxation and other emperial lark. So the Irish government are charging people for water to meet demands of austerity. It has been the first act of austerity and the public (working class) are not taking it. It's revolutionary stuff dude.

We pay for tap water over here in the states, so I guess I'm more surprised it's been free there.

Yeah that's because the government in America has a stronger capitalist grip on its public. The conditions for the working class in America are very dreadful in general.

Yes a lot of nations have privatised one of thier most natural resource in water, i know that. What is your point?

Based on what I've read it's not privatised, but rather run by the government. Seems Ireland is one of the only countries that doesn't pay for it after further research. My point? Not really making a point, just educating myself a bit I reckon.

Seems the Irish have been very lucky to have this as a free service in my eyes. Not that taking it away makes for an easy pill to swallow.

The government is inforcing it. It is ran by a private company. A private company is trying to install the meters in neighbourhoods but the working class's solidarity is I keeping them at bay.
It is not down to luck that the irish people have free water. They tried to do this in the 80's and 90's but the country got together and stoped it through protesting. It starts with water and then it grows from there. It's all a part of the Austerity threaty put on the Irish people. So the working class can pay for the bankers. The water would be the start of major increase in charges and taxes in other services. Just because privatisation i common everywhere should not make.it acceptable or mean's that we are lucky. I know its part of our national projected culture 'the luck of the irish' but we make are own luck.
I'm not saying Liverpool or Ireland are anyway near socialist areas but the two places are more socialist minded than the rest of brittain when it comes to the pushin back against some extremes of capitalism.
