Iran before revolution

Didn't the Shah have his lunch flown in from Paris by Concorde? Even if it's a myth, he was otherwise flash with his cash while people starved. So his reign was always going to be toppled*...

*even if the World Police were in his corner.

Seen a few progs about Afghanistan being the same as Iran pre islamic revolution as well. They talk about veils & burkhas being a religious tool of oppression but I think the loons that were in charge saw both the religion & the veils as a way of oppressing the population, as much about pure control as anything else by those in charge.

Both countries looked amazing, father in law travelled all through Syria in 60's & he said it was amazing & never encountered a single problem, he sent back postcards that are also records.

I went to Baghdad back in 2005, you can tell from flying over it that it would have been a nice place before all the fighting. You could probably visit a lot of these places without encountering any trouble, but the scaremongering from the media means most people wouldn’t want to go near them.

They tried to do the same with Russia before the WC, was stories in the papers for years about how anyone who wanted to go would be endangering their lives; then it turned out to be a brilliant WC and everyone who went said they loved the place.
That's RS Alan Green made himself look a right bonehead by preaching exactly those sentiments. I'm left wondering if anyone has publicly challenged him on the topic.

Anthony Bourdain visits Tehran/Iran in his Parts Unknown series (on Netflix). Its a great episode and helps to dispel the myth somewhat about them being part of the axis of evil yet it also doesn't (not sure if I've explained that well). They seem in the main very generous educated people and in the Parts Unknown episode I failed to see a single woman who wasn't extremely attractive.

Agreed that was a good watch I thought. There's one by Rick Steves which I found on Youtube which was goods too.

My Dad went to Syria every now and then on business and loved it. Said the people were really welcoming.
