iPad and external hard drives

Contrary to my post a few months ago, I did buy one of these, but it is for my wife, and she is loving it! I have to admit, it is a nifty bit of kit. Although, so far the only thing I have really used it for is to play games :)

I don't know about the external HDD thing jd, most of the stuff we do is cloud-based which is why I stuck with the 'base model' 16Gb WiFi only version (oh, and refurbished, so $150 off the price right there).
Got the wife one for this christmas and ahem a "big" birthday in a month or so she too loves the damn thing me i cant see whats the fuss about tech for techs sake tbh

Well, Apple products have flaws. They are very proprietary and don't make use of tech standards. For instance there is absolutely no reason whatsoever not to have a USB port for things like uploading photos from digital cameras, external hard drives, non-wireless printers. You have to buy all of these adapters etc. which is more money. Plus it doesn't support flash driven websites. Which isn't a problem unless you want to view 66% of web videos.

Having said that I can't wait to get my hands on the thing!

Exactly, things that should come as standard. But they do boss marketing and insecure gimps fall for it then spend 27% of their waking hours boasting how great it us as to try and justify them being ripped off for purchasing it.

Have to agree with you of what i've seen the screen is brilliant one of the best screens(touch or otherwise) i've seen but given she's had her claws on it for the last couple of days i've not really run it through its paces not a fan of Apple for the reasons mentioned above but its what the she wanted and given it's a big birthday i'd been saving like mad for something special but didn't have a clue what to get her so she saved me a trip round the shops.

But as i say to me as it stands its tech for tech sake now if it had come with say a phone on it then yeah i could see the reason for it but as it is i wouldnt have one for myself.

The next versions are going to fix some of the flaws like no cameras, etc. Won't do me any good, but again it was a gift so I'm not turning it back in. But if I don't like it, I may end up getting another tablet like the Blackberry Playbook or the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Don't bother with the Samsung Galaxy, your flash driven websites are slow and unstable on that tablet. The smart thing to do would be wait until Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) is released later this year which Google will support for tablets. The current Android 2.x tablets are just not worth it (with the possible sole exception of the B&N Nook Color, providing their app store takes off in January)

I agree with this.

Although, compare what you get with the Galaxy tab, and if you buy the iPad refurbished, it is currently the best value for money out there (they start at about $400 for refurbished iPads). Compare that to the Galaxy tab, without a contract, you are looking at least $600.

Tablets have a big future, and currently Apple is in the lead. Hopefully this is rectified and Samsung and LG launch some awesome Google supported tabs later this year (hell, I am sure MS will get in on this business with WP7 tablets of some sort, hopefully). And the Playbook.....I hope it does well, I really do.

And one last parting swipe at Steve Jobs, who ridiculed the idea of a 7" tablet at one of Apple's super-important shareholder finance sessions
" It is meaningless, unless your tablet also includes sandpaper, so that the user can sand down their fingers to around one quarter of the present size"

Does he not realise that millions of his companies iPhones and iPod Touch devices have a ~4" screen???? Hypocrisy? Of course, just Job's normal way of distorting reality to mirror his own warped version of the world.
