iPad and external hard drives

Ok, so my sister got me an iPad for Christmas out of the blue. While I"m incredibly grateful for the gift, I specifically wasn't going to get myself an iPad when I bought a tablet because, among many other reasons, it does not have a USB port, which among other things, means I can't connect a portable external hard drive to it.

Has anyone figured out a way to do this fairly easily? Everything I've read says the camera adapter does not work just by plugging in the EHD.

Contrary to my post a few months ago, I did buy one of these, but it is for my wife, and she is loving it! I have to admit, it is a nifty bit of kit. Although, so far the only thing I have really used it for is to play games :)

I don't know about the external HDD thing jd, most of the stuff we do is cloud-based which is why I stuck with the 'base model' 16Gb WiFi only version (oh, and refurbished, so $150 off the price right there).

And do you really need all of your music on it? Just go with a random sampling of 16Gb worth, that leaves you room for apps and videos and shizz.

No, I want to keep all of my stuff (mp3, docs, photos, everything) on a external hard drive and simply use my other machines as thin clients. That's the goal anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited as hell. There's a lot the iPad does well.

Does your wife use the e-reader? Next decision to use iBooks, Kindle for iPad, or Nook for iPad.

Use an rdp client then, and use apple remote app to stream it.

Well the hard drive on my PC crashed, so I have to figure out what to do next. I have everything backed up online (Carbonite - literally the day I brought my new portable HD home the HDD crashed) and just need to press a button to reinstall but I'm debating whether to just go out and get a cheap tower and reinstall on that. Then I could RDP into that like you said, but I need to figure out where to re-install. I was hoping I could just download everything to my external HD and then plug it in to my iPad, laptop, or any PC and have direct access to it.

Well, this is not an easy question. Your getting into the realms of moving iTunes libraries etc( I don't use a sync library, I manually manage ) so..this is a difficult one.

A restore of the data to another Pc? Youll also need to "authorise" that machine, and you wont (from my experience ) be able to sync anything from it to a.n other iOS device either.

Yeah it's a tough one. I think I'm going to just have to bite the bullet and get a new PC, then use my ipod as the mp3 bridge. But of course I mostly listen to that in the car, so it involves me bringing the ipod back and forth from the car which isn't THAT big a deal, but it's a slight pain the ass.

I think I may have cracked it.

I need to clean up my mp3 folders and make sure they are all in one folder, and then map it to dropbox and then map another instance of itunes on my ipad to dropbox as well. I don't think there are any flaws to this plan. I don't think the files in dropbox use of HD space either.
