Interview with Xavi

Is Paul Scholes the English Xavi?

[Xavi interrupts, almost bursting with enthusiasm] Paul Scholes! A role model. For me – and I really mean this – he's the best central midfielder I've seen in the last 15, 20 years. I've spoken to Xabi Alonso about him. He's spectacular, he has it all: the last pass, goals, he's strong, he doesn't lose the ball, vision. If he'd been Spanish he might have been rated more highly. Players love him.

Another in the Paul Scholes appreciation society. The midfielder's midfielder. Never got the recognition he deserves IMO

Scholes is the best English player of his generation. Beats Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, Owen et al hands down.

Definately agree, him and Giggs were the best of that Man Utd youth squad by far, different players but identical attitudes, play hard, train hard and leave it on the field. Amazing talent. If only Giggs had been English!

As far as Xavi's words that I quoted are concerned: what football club doesn't have identity? He's saying there that other clubs playing and winning don't count as much because they 'dont have identity'...they're not the same. Well. he's half right actually - they're not the same as Barca with their overblown self-importance and their army of propaganda foot soldiers telling them how great they are...most other clubs just get on with their own history and match playing and dont bore the arse off everyone else with it.

This ^^^^^, there are one or two clubs getting carried away on their own propaganda...

Indeed. The worst part about the whole Más que un club is that even in la liga its bollocks, the likes of Athletic have a far stronger claim to the whole football as a metaphor thing and dont surrender their principles at the first sign of massive amounts of cash.

That said, seeing one club so far up its own arse like that does lend itself to occasional moments of sheer comedy - like this. If we had done that to the RS I dont think I would ever get tired of mentioning it, it would be better than winning the league.
