Internet throttling

If you're on Sky's Unlimited package, they don't throttle your internet speeds (been with them for years, and never had it happen once, plus contract states they won't do it), so it's more likely to be a line fault or something like that - especially if it's jumping up and down erratically as you say.

Also, even companies that DO throttle, they don't do it to the degree that you're mentioning (from 16-18mbps down to 0.2 (which would equate to a download speed of something like 20KB/s)

Cheers for that. We've had line issues the whole time. There is interference in the line that's so bad we can't use the land line. They've never been able to fix it..
 

Plug your laptop directly into the router and disable the wifi on your laptop and do the speed test.

Or you could log in to the modem/router admin page and see what speed the modem is getting...
