Merkel is someone to fear, but mainly in a positive way. She clearly wants the best for a unified and prosperous Germany. However, her upbringing in East German politics has ensured she is somewhat charismatic yet ruthless. She will work with people if it's in the greater good, yet also has no quibbles with doing things her own way if it will benefit Germany.

Germany set a 3% limit of debt related to GDP which became European policy. Who broke it first? Germany of course, as they saw it necessary for a short-term boost of the economy. Others moaned, Merkel just ignored them. While everyone else lagged behind entangled in red tape, they pushed forward and are now propping up the rest of the Euro Zone as the economic powerhouse.

I think Hague has some serious skeletons in his closet.

He's allegedly a closet homosexual. Bit of an open secret, apparently.

The aide he slept with (it's a fact they shared a room) resigned immediately due to "family pressure", and Hague thought it was appropriate to reveal his wife's miscarriages as proof of his heterosexual manhood.

Not the normal reactions of genuinely heterosexual colleagues who happened to have shared a room on business...

It is such a sorry state of affairs that politicians and public alike still are drawn in by the 'homosexual' stigma.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest what sexual orientation they have, it is how they act in office.

Unfortunately, it still an issue! It doesn't help that politicians etc. continue to fuel the stigma by keeping quiet. Be honest!

I'm more concerned that he's cheating on his partner: if he impaling a man, woman or a dog is only extra detail.

Agree there. If the new generation of prominent people come out now, then there will be no issue. They would not have got married under a pretence that this was the normal thing to do, for instance.

It is ridiculous, bordering on the pathetic, how much of a taboo it is in football.

There is a lad in our Saturday team who is gay and the only thing which bothers me is: can he play football? "Oh but what if he looks at you in the shower? etc etc". So what, take it as a compliment if they do. If you're confident in your sexuality what does it matter?

There are no openly gay footballers in English football, yet working just on simple chances of probability there are clearly gay footballers. It isn't just in football though.. I read something on the BBC not so long ago about an NFL player who came out, yet was then not chosen by any clubs during the draft.

Aye...give it time, tho'. Wasn't that long ago that homosexual sex was legally confined only to those aged 21 & over, and not long before that it was entirely illegal. I think in time it will normalise within society. My city (Berlin) is very gay-friendly, tho' saying that I don't think the Berlin football clubs have publicly had a gay player on their ranks, so within the macho football culture there's still a way to go.

And just a quick note to anyone thinking of asking "why should a gay player even feel the need to come out? His sexuality is his business.", it's because he feels unable to go on public dates with his partner like hetero pairs would. It really does need the first couple to come out of their own accord to normalise it for everyone else.
