Might sound simple but what did Shackleton actually do?

What!!!!!!

Only the greatest feat of endurance, leadership, courage and single-minded conviction ever in the world of exploration.

During an expedition to Antarctica in 1916, his ship "Endurance" became trapped in the ice, and was crushed, as the ice field started to break up he got his men into lifeboats and made it to Elephant island after 5 days at sea. There they became stranded without hope of rescue, so he ordered 5 of the stronger members of his crew into an open lifeboat and set out on an 800 mile journey across the southern ocean hoping to make it to South Georgia.

The journey to South Georgia took 15 horrendous days. The navigational skills were simply amazing, he only had a compass, a sextant, and the stars!!

On reaching South Georgia they then had to cross an uncharted mountain range, and navigate multiple glaciers before reaching the whaling station. He then went on the rescue ship to Elephant island to get his men, but he tried 3 times to reach them but was beaten by pack ice every time. He eventually made it to them late August some 4 months after leaving them behind. He rescued all 22 of his men.

A truly amazing feat by a very extraordinary man! - A total legend

There is a mini series on Discovery Channel where they recreate Shackletons journey using the equipment that they would have had at the time.

Some good photos/footage of the Original crew in it.
