In Memory - Minutes Applause or a Minutes Silence

Loved the way Speeds minutes silence turned into applause and cheering his name- very moving.

The whole reason the minutes applause came in was when certain fans would still make noise over the silence so the applause would drown out any noise.

In what context - if any? - do you see as the most apt?

Does it matter?

In the context of Gary Speed, I believe a minutes applause is in order, just as an appreciation of his past exploits as an Everton captain, being an Evertonian and being a good manager at a young age.

If observed properly a minute's silence is best. I'd love a minute's silence followed by a minutes applause, which gives time for private thoughts plus a public show of appreciation for a fellow Blue

Sad to say but I don't want a minutes silence at Goodison. You know there's always going to be one [Poor language removed]. And in a silence all it takes is one to drag our club through the mud.

It should be silence for a minute, but some people cant behave themselves so it's come to non-sensical clapping.

That said, I dont think there should be any minute silences at all. Football cheapens things like remembering some death/anniversary. Football stadiums are for football.

Always silence, always, it shows more respect, yes, clearly some scum have no respect and will try and spoil it, I think a law should be passed, anybody that breaks a minutes silence, your allowed to take them outside and beat them to a messy pulp.

Found the spontanious applause and chanting at Swansea really moving, (was driving, and had to pull over), but so was the silence at Anfield later on. One lad at Anfield had his scarf held up, with YNWA displayed, during the silence. Fair play to him. Perhaps we should try and get a steer from his family, but TBH, they have more important thimngs to worry about, so on balance, as an Evertonian, if it was me, I think applause would be more "appreciated" as a gesture to the man.

Silence...once attended a hockey game between NYPD and FDNY with an impeccably observed minute of silence for those killed in the line of duty. Made a lasting impression on me

Personal preference really isn't it? If i died ( i am not comparing myself to Mr Speed here )

I wouldn't want people to mourn me, i'd prefer applause only because a minutes silence is a bit of a opportunity for some people... if you know what i mean.

For me, if its "tragic" - life deemed to be 'cut short', it has to be silence.

So Gary Speed, would be a minutes silence.

With Bobby Robson on the other hand, an applause seemed more apt.
