Four years ago today, my dad passed away after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. It was his second major illness, having beaten lung cancer six years previously.
My dad is the sole reason I'm a member of this forum. He moved to Scotland in the early 70's and met my mum but never lost his love for the blues. This was something he passed on to me in my formulative years. As they say, "we are born, not manufactured...."
My first game was against Spurs at Goodison in the 1990-91 season. I don't remember the score, who played, the weather, anything about the match. I remember how exciting it was to be sat next to my dad at something so special, so different, so big.
Over the years, we made hundreds of trips down the M6 from Scotland to go to Goodison. Some good, some bad, some depressing. (see W. Smith)
Our last game together was Spurs away a few seasons ago. Zinedine Kilbane was sent off after half an hour, and we feared the worst. The blues thought differently though and went on to win 2-0, our first WHL victory in beards.
Dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in October 2007 and despite battling bravely, succumbed to the illness early in the morning of Sunday 25th November, as we sat by his side. The night before, I sat by his bed, watching match of the day as Everton rattled seven past a hapless Sunderland. As every goal went in, he would raise a fist in celebration and squeeze my hand.
My brother and I were lucky enough to get tickets for the cup final in '09. As Abide With Me was sung, I cried buckets, wishing he'd been there to see it with us.
