Improving WiFi signal at home

A router would definitely help.

Some things you could try but not guaranteed to work,
switch between 2/5ghz,
Move the box around to a place with nothing blocking it beside or in-front of it.
Change the frequency channels your 2/5ghz are on some other people might be in your area using the same channel.
Turning on and off every couple of weeks can help.
@-Rob-
This channel thing is a good thing to look at.
There's an app that tells you what everybody around you is using...I think there may even be a default channel that routers pick up on first (say channel 1?)
Download that app and the app for your router and in the router app you should be able to pick the channel with the least punters on it

That's all I got. Other than that its the sawdust option.
Edit. Also a new 'more power' router, they alway try to foist off their own cheap as chips router kn you sayjjng its the only one that will work etc.
There are a few that are sometimes incompatible, keep the bill you'll find out soon enough.
Usually cheap is not your friend with routers

It has there billing department is new as they have gone on a cloud server which has caused problems I have been with them for years the customer support is curtious, and not offshore - I can ask my son who is a PC Microsoft qualified engineer to look at this thread and maybe he knows a cheap reliable fix for the poster , but @Bungle is usually good !
Only stonewall old cottages have caused him problems then it's a cable and drill job for good WiFi......

You should have mentioned that before Joey....

Great band... :D

Seriously on the subject of this thread, I have Virgin broadband, and the router is at the back of the house in my office.

When I start my car on the drive at the front, the onboard gubbins starts banging on about wanting to check to a wifi hub to do check for software updates. It can't see mine whatsoever, but about six more elsewhere in the street are loud and proud in its bloody list! How they get 100 yards range when I struggle for 15 I have no idea

If I want to connect it, I have to set my phone as a wifi hotspot...

Plusnet is 1 of the worst Internet providers you can get.

My daughter had it for a year, it was constantly off all the time and was just horrific.

Really bad company. As soon as her contract was up she went to Virgin.

Personally ive never had any issues with Virgin, I had a few issues like last year but that was down to a faulty modem, they sent me a new 1 and other than that I cant complain at all and ive been with them for about 20 years. Wouldnt go with anyone else myself.

I've been with virgin for the last 5 years. Fantastic Internet but expensive. Unfortunately we've moved house to an estate that can't get virgin.

UPDATE

I've been in to the router settings and split out the 2.4 & 5 on to separate networks. E also used a WiFi analyser app to find unused channels and set them up to channels my neighbours aren't using.

So far the 2.4 network seems to be the strongest and quickest signal through the house so I've connected the TV and my phone to that. Both have seemed to work pretty well since so I'll have to give it a few days to see if it consistently works well.

I have found taking out ceilings floors walls and doors has improved my WiFi... Seriously if internet is important I keep it wired... Either laying ethernet to every room, or using a homeplug got to be on the same electric ring circut. Homeplug in conjunction with WiFi extender can be the answer if people insist.

If WiFi is still a must, using WiFi analysiser on your chosen operating system can help also, this will enable see if your router is competing in channel hoping with other routers, if so you can fix the channel in your router, to least congested.

Makes sense 2.4ghz is more robust than 5ghz... It use to annoy the claims ISPs make about their WiFi, they must literally test in a box which is inside a faraday cage and make wild claims, not my game anymore. If you are ever inclined to buy new kit to get the best out of the internet, use distant selling regulations to your advantage, So Amazon etc. As broadband and WiFi is very subjective to your circumstances.

I've recently moved house and signed up to broadband from PlusNet after several recommendations from friends. The speed of the internet doesn't seem to be a problem, it's running consistently at 45mbps which is fast enough but I'm having problems with the WiFi signal consistency around the house. The WiFi signal to the TV in the lounge is particularly bad.

What are my options for improving the signal to all devices in the house?

I've considered the option of purchasing a better router but I wouldn't have a clue how to set it up once I received it. Any help on that side of things?
Am I translating this correctly
the signal on the WiFi in my room is rubbish so when I want to watch a bit of sly porn I can’t, does anyone have any ideas?
I had the same problem mate, one of those plug in boosters made ours better
