Improving WiFi signal at home

I've recently moved house and signed up to broadband from PlusNet after several recommendations from friends. The speed of the internet doesn't seem to be a problem, it's running consistently at 45mbps which is fast enough but I'm having problems with the WiFi signal consistency around the house. The WiFi signal to the TV in the lounge is particularly bad.

What are my options for improving the signal to all devices in the house?

I've considered the option of purchasing a better router but I wouldn't have a clue how to set it up once I received it. Any help on that side of things?

I've got a netgear extender so I can get wifi in the back yard. Seems you have to make sure the extender and the router will be friendly before buying. For some reason some models/brands don't like each other.

I tried one of those with my Virgin WiFi at my old house so I could get signal in the garden but rather than extend the existing network, it just took the original signal and set up a new network. So when I was out in the garden my phone would still pick up a really weak signal from the router rather than swap over to the stronger signal from the extender.

Probably worth having a chat with PlusNet and seeing if they can do anything with your existing router first from their end if you're not comfortable doing it yourself. I had issues with Sky previously and they did something that fixed the issue from their end, I think they might have just changed the channel it was using.

If you have the username/password for the router you can login yourself and change the channel and see if that works.

My lad was having problems with the wifi in his room,a netgear booster and an app called wifi analytics helped

I've spoken to them 3 times in the last 10 days and all they've done is send me links to useless self help guides that don't help at all.

I've got Plusnet broadband and had similar problems. A coredy dual-band wifi extender solved the problem. It has the advantage of splitting the signal into discreet 2.4 and 5Ghz channels.

In effect you then have 3 channels

1. If you're close to your original router you can join that network at whatever frequency you have setup.
2. If around the house away from your original router you can then connect to a discreet 2.4Ghz freq network
3. If around the house away from your original router you can then connect to a discreet 5Ghz freq network

You can set individual passwords for all 3 networks or use the same password for all 3 - works a treat.

Have you got the router login details? They might even be on a label on the router itself.

If you have then stick the ip address (apparently should be 192.168.1.254) into your web browser and login and see if fiddling with the settings in there make any difference.

If all else fails it's time to sell the house and downsize so that the signal has less distance to travel.

I've lived there 12 days and haven't even managed to explore the basement or the servants quarters yet so I wasn't planning on moving house again just yet.

Better router always a fantastic option. I had to upgrade because in my household, 3 phones, 4 computers, steaming devices, online gaming, etc all ate up the connection. Upgraded to the top line ASUS router and all seems better now. Of course an extender doesnt hurt

I wasn't prepared to put up with the angst of wifi for my tv so I ran a network cable between the two. Always flawless.
