I know what you saying mate thats why i put cities not just schools setting terms

I don't think it would work in practice as schools don't fall under the governance of cities. More and more schools are now academies, effectively independent and others are beholden to local education authorities (of which a large city would contain several) as well as the diocese in the case of some church schools.

Even if it could be done, the travel industry would just find some other way of making sure we all pay through the nose along every step of the journey.

If you're really that upset, how about talking to your children's school about what exactly defines the allowed for circumstances and how they feel this will pan out in reality. Chasing up every parent who takes a couple of extra days at either end of a half term will put a huge workload onto EWO's and parents could easily just say their children were sick. Also, whatever reason is given for wanting the additional leave, no one will actually check to see if that actually happens. In other words, people will lie and no one will bother to check.

No doubt many people moaning about this are the same people who are so concerned about the impact on their children's education when teachers go on a days strike (not intended as a dig at the OP, just an observation).

Talk to the schools, lol they wouldn't give me permission this summer, I took them on holiday on the last two weeks of the term, its was 1600 cheaper, the school spend the last week on proms and charities and watching films such as grease. I went against them as they couldn't really stop me, I got a nasty letter telling me I cant do it again next summer as the laws will be in place to stop me. If you have two children in school, you cannot used the illness excuses.

You can use any excuse you like. As long as its plausible, noone will check. If you tell the school you are taking them on holiday and that's that, the school will react in a way that ensures they have met their legal obligations. Tell them that you're going to your sisters wedding or some other once in a blue moon family event and you may get a different response. As for sickness, siblings do get ill at the same time. A few days, no one will bat an eyelid. 2 weeks is never going to be believed.

I agree in part, but my daughter is 5.5 now, and we are away in October and it's not expensive.

It's not a "new" law. It was passed in 2010, IIRC. However, it has not been enforced at any time.

Although I agree that there are certain days of the year when children are not given anything useful to do by their schools (I remember watching movies on the last day of term), I don't believe this is a valid reason to take a child out of school for a two-week holiday when they are supposed to be in class.

Call me old-fashioned, but my parents taught me that if you wanted something, you saved up for it until you could afford it. They never mentioned an exception for holidays..... or children. I'm sorry but if you don't budget for things like holidays when planning to have children then that's your own fault, not the fault of the travel agents or the schools. Me and Mrs Tree can't afford children yet, so we haven't had any yet; everyone is free to make their own choice, but why anyone would make their decision differently baffles me.

As for the travel agents raising prices outside term time: You may as well complain that Range Rover have priced their cars out of reach of certain portions of society - it's simple economics mate. More people want to go on holiday when the schools are off, so the travel agents can raise their prices because there is a rise in demand for the same finite supply.

Finally, it is hardly wrong for schools to demand that children be in school during term time.

Rule no. 1 if you find yourself without anything to do, masturbate. If it's on transfer deadline day you can add 'furiously' to that. Prolly some tears, too.
