A great player. One of the few that deserves that adjective. A long, happy, healthy and prosperous retirement to the man.

Always felt the end of his career at Real was a bit odd - it was very Mourinho to decide to cut out the captain and one of best goalkeepers of all time

Meh. Overrated.
Joke surely?

Remember watching Real during the failed latter part of the Galactico era (just after Makelele left which left them totally unbalanced), Casillas was head and shoulders the best player in the team. He was the only one playing like a galactico.

I’d imagine his two career highlights are the save with his feet when Robben was clean through in the World Cup final, and his one man barrier that prevented Leverkusen equalising in the CL final.

Even though he's quite a short fella for a goalkeeper , he managed to be one of the best in the world.
Just imagine that , a short goalie who commands his area and doesn't go beserk when a calm head is needed . Who would of thought.

Being a goalkeeper around the same age (albeit he is a few years younger) I assure you I am not. I would watch other goalies and I would always be able to pick out errors in his game more than most. He was a keeper for the cameras, perfectly decent but not worthy of the praise that is bestowed upon him.

For instance that world cup final save he got lucky, he dived the wrong way (bad goalkeeping showing your hand to the striker first) and although it was a recovery save his legs were there anyhow from said dive to the wrong side, he stuck out a toe and diverted the ball. It's not like he had to move it half a metre while diving to the wrong side to safe it.

Not having that mate. Too many people in the game say he’s among the best ever. All those pots he won (every single honour in the sport) he was a massive part of. The World Cup save was world class reflexes, and the most important save in Spanish football history. In the era of Zidane, Ronaldo (albeit past it), Beckham, Raul and Figo, the best player at Real was the fella in nets.

Small in stature (for a gk), but a giant in the sport.

Football is all about opinions mate. Another man's rubbish is another man's gold. If you win a lot of pots you get elevated to a certain level, I didn't see Casillas being THE difference in the sides he played for. Just imagine what Southall would have been classed as if he had played for that Real Madrid team and that Spanish national side.
