One of the many, many things I love about Everton is that it was founded by people imaginitive enough not just to name the club after the city, but of an area within it.

T'other day though, a random thought crossed my mind. What if we hadn't been called Everton. Other cities with two teams often go down the route of united or city.*

Would we be the United, or the City in Liverpool? Or wedsnesday, or albion , or wanderers, or rangers?

I think we'd be City but for absolutely no reason other than a hunch. Perhaps it's the blue

*apart from Newcastle, who are unnecessarily called united, the attention seeking vanity whores

...we would never be called Liverpool, never mind City or United. What’s our name? Everton.
Yeah, I was trying to avoid thinking of that alternative though, or even mentioning it.

But before the name of the fine city was besmirched by the offspring Johnny come lately club, it wouldn't have been such a bad call.

...I have actually thought about this in the past, Chris. I imagine it is an adavantage carrying the name of a major global city.

Good post. Love the fact we kept the name - totally different to most other clubs.

So Everton if not Everton could be... Vale? Maybe not, but it reminds me of quite a good quiz question naming the 19 or so team extensions from Prem to League 2.

Here's my best effort in under 2 mins*

United
City
Hotspur
Palace
Rovers
Albion
Wanderers
Athletic
County
Town
Villa
Wednesday
Forest
Vale
Alexandra
Northend
Argyle
Orient

I'm sure there's a couple missing.

I don't think that a great deal of imagination went into it originally. It was just that some of the earliest clubs in bigger cities grew out of a particular district, ie Everton in Liverpool, Aston in Birmingham, Woolwich Arsenal. Man United were originally Newton Heath, and Birmingham City were Small Heath Alliance. Liverpool only took that name after the FA rejected their wish to call themselves Everton Athletic.

I think it was the basis of a running gag in an episode of that detective programme with jasper carrot and Robert power. Can't remember what it was called.

Does Liverpool have a valley (vale) though?
