If the U.S. has its best athletes playing soccer...

America has huge potential but "Soccer" isn't a game for athletes and big lads. They'll get you so far but to be the best you need that certain "Je ne sais quoi".

Flair and skill, not really seeing that from American players to date....

Think Barca, think puskas.

"Look at that little fat chap. We'll murder this lot."

Ninety minutes later Hungary had slaughtered England 6-3.

The "little fat chap" was Ferenc Puskas, the Hungarian captain. Indeed, he was an odd looking footballer. He was short, stocky, barrel-chested, overweight, couldn't head and only used one foot. Yet no one in Britain had seen ball skills like his as he inspired a performance that completely demolished England's reputation as a world football power.

Well if that happened it would probably mean the only sport in existence was soccer and the same applied to every country... so probably China and Russia.

Most american football players in the NFL could not keep going for 90 mins consistent cardio.

When Dhani Jones did a travel show he played socced, rugby gaelic football and other various sports in different countries he admitted that it was alot different and the training was sometimes harder as their was alot more running.

American football players even RB and WR need bursts of speed as they get to stop. That and they need power and alot of strength due to the takcling and the nature of the game.

In soccer you don't need alot of muscle as long as you a fit and can do a lot of running.

Now if you are saying tomorrow all of these lads took up soccer then no they would still be sh*t as they would need to learn how to play the game. Just because they are athletes it does not mean they can play the game. I refer you to Chad Ochocincco's trials a kansas or whoever it was

I don't think the US athletes would give that great of an advantage. Each country can only put out 11 players at a time, so I have a hard time believing that a USA 11 would be appreciably better than a Brazil, Spain etc 11. The law of diminishing returns comes into play, I think.

As far as the conditioning goes, if Dhani Jones was a "soccer" player, he wouldn't be 235 lbs. If am. football players were trained as soccer players they would certainly have more skill than Chad Ochocinco.

I think there are plenty of athletes, however, that are just too small to play in college and pro american football that would have been great soccer players.

best athletes doesn't transfer across to best footy players, I have a mate that played scrum half for Saints, won them a semi at o.t. and played Shaun Edwards off the park. He was gash at footy.

His son however looks like he'll be a good 'un and has been at the r/s pre-academy for 3 years (he's 7-8 now)

Nah, the sport is still young in the US in comparison with the rest of the world and, in general, we are not yet fertile soil for producing world-class footballers. It says something that Clint Dempsey grew up in an environment with a huge Latin American influence. With this in mind and given the immigration trends, I wouldn't be surprised if some outstanding players whose parents immigrated to the US from Latin America and Africa break onto the scene within the next twenty years. I work a lot with second-generation students and they play and follow futbol far more than their peers.

The US player pool is already just as, if not more "athletic" than other nations. It wouldn't hurt, but of course it will never happen.

You could end up with the best side in the world, or a team of Jermaine Beckford's. We need to do a better job of teaching technical skills. We're already great athletes, and strong team players. We need better players on the ball. More of them.

I used to play Rugby sevens a while back when I was stationed in Berlin. There used to be a mini-world-cup organised, Consisting of

England
Scotland - There always seemed to be a regiment of Jocks in Berlin
Ireland - Players drawn from the various Irish Bars in Berlin
Wales - There always just enough Welsh types
France
And finally, the good old US of A where invited to attend, they responded by sending a team of absolute monsters. However they always got battered by everyone....They did however beat the Irish once, but the Irish where all completely bladdered from the night before.

Thing is, it doesn't matter how big, how fast, how strong you are - Rugby, and football are team games where skill, running and tactics are the mainstay for eventual success.

I would also like to point out that the Americans were superb after-match company, and they brightened up the tournament with their presence, unlike the French who sulked whenever they got beat!
