now you're gonna hear about it
In simple terms, I'm very terrible at FIFA. I'm the guy you want to get matched with when you play online. I need help, so I'm turning to the help of GOT to teach me how to be less crap at FIFA. What are some simple tips I can work on to be decent at the game?

@Bryan

I would advise:

- Playing at a slow pace irrespective of opposition pressing
- Poor first touches and inaccurate passing
- Playing at least 2 players out of position per game
- Try to get the ball out wide but don't make any delivery into the box
- Allow the opposition to get numbers behind the ball and then try and play through them
- If a player gets within 5 feet of your player in possession, immediately play it back to your keeper regardless of any sideways/forward pass options that may be on

Hope you find this helpful, mate.

Be patient when defending, don't use team pressing all the time. High pressing will work against average players, but the top ones will pick you apart quite easily. If the player I'm playing against is not very good, I just press the hell out of them as soon as I lose the ball (but be careful not to drag players out of position). If they're good players who are capable of just passing it out of trouble, I just get as many men back as soon as possible and try and force them into a mistake.

Don't be afraid to dribble and to pass it short around their box waiting for an opening when you can't see any, most players are not patient enough and opportunities will present themselves.

Oh, and don't sprint. You only really need it on very few situations.

Thanks. I already do these naturally. Good to know that if I keep with what I've been doing, it will all turn around.

Pace is overpowered to the point that Nedum Onuoha of QPR is 100x better than John terry, simply because he has 83 pace and john terry only has 41.

also try to keep your CB's in position as much as possible. If you can, use your CDM's/CM's to try to tackle the strikers. Run back with them to try to catch the players even if they are quite a long way in front of you providing your back line is in position.

Defending:

Jockey. Don't rush defenders out, just jockey your man and bring in a 2nd defender if you need to -- again don't abuse this, people will get pulled out of position. Try and predict what they are going to do. People aren't that smart; if someone keeps making a run down the wing to cross, or skills and cuts in, you know it's their preference. Expect it, wait, take the ball.

Attacking:

Crossing is pretty poor, only cross if you've got someone in clear space. 1-2 passes and through balls are one of the best ways to get the ball to a striker's feet in a good position. Having someone good at dribbling is good too; it's quite easy to win pens and FKs, and scoring FKs is very, very easy when you get the hang of it. Finesse shots from close range, tucked under/to the side of the keeper are probably the best way to score. Don't shoot from distance unless you're winning comfortably/desperate/bored -- that said, I've finally got the knack of long shots in this game and they're very satisfying to score!

What kind of problems do you have specifically though? Struggling to score, defend, win headers, do you know how to do basic things like 1-2 passes? Etc. I'm pretty good at the new FIFA, though I mainly play UT where pace is exaggerated. However I don't like the game that much and no matter how good you are, you will lose to crap people playing exploitative tactics, so don't get too concerned about losing!

I like to play with the Everton 4-2-3-1 with the two deep sitting midfielders. Having the two CMs allows you to cover for poor positioning of players when you are being counter-attacked as well as providing the ability to win headers in the midfield. Then when attacking I use the flanks to move the ball between the full backs and wingers and the closest CM to progress up the field, if it isn't working I move the ball back to the full back and switch the play. Once you're close to the final third I get it into the CAM to either play a short through ball for the striker or to ping it back out to the wing for a cross.

Learn how to do a couple of the skill moves, remember they are camera relative, I find the most useful ones to be the roulette and the one where they move the ball back with one foot to bounce it off of their standing foot and burst forward. Speed is still important, especially on the flanks, in the CM and CB positions you want some strength, it is no use having a quick CM with no strength because they will overrun the ball or bounce off of the attacker. When being attacked, don't commit to a tackle immediately. Use L2 to jockey and move the defender backwards until you can be sure which direction around you the attacker will choose to take and then step in. Defending is about positioning and you should be jockeying while maintaining your defensive players positions.

Assume the worst... I can play ok, but I only play against AI (both in player and manager modes) and I know I'm not getting better. Not sure how to practice skill moves (using FIFA 14--I liked the old practice setup in prior versions) and generally rush to goal when I have the ball. And I rush to tackle when I don't have it. So, I'm pretty impatient and need to slow down and let the game proceed naturally.
