I have a confession to make ... and no it's not that I'd totally go for a three-way with Arteta and Rodwell ... after all that wouldn't be a horrible, dark secret; why that's more of a glorious dream.
No, my confession is this: I really enjoy watching Everton football club play football.
I even enjoyed the bloody Stoke game -- it was only afterward, when people told me we were [Poor language removed], that I realized I'd made a horrible mistake.
Granted it wasn't a masterclass, I know we can play better, but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed that I never felt like we were going to lose. I enjoyed that they played us like we were an elite team (and it's not the first time we've seen that -- even when we're away from home some teams have approached us very cautiously). Chelsea and company don't win 5-0 every week -- teams park buses and they grind out victories. I enjoyed how it felt like we were that kind of team.
I don't think enjoying how we play now and wanting us to get better are mutually exclusive. I can appreciate and enjoy watching how we play now and want us to improve in the future.
Unless I'm repressing some memories, I think I've enjoyed most of the games this year (Newcastle game was hideous). I obviously didn't enjoy the ones we lost -- but most of the time in those games I felt like we were playing well and were going to score soon. It was as if, once the game was finished I thought, "well that was good, we played really well .......... oh bugger it all we only went and forgot to score!"
I enjoy how we pass the ball around. Yeah it doesn't always lead to something but it looks pretty and it's progress in the right direction. (Many of the "elite" teams often have similar days.)
We've even played some great football (some would argue among our best) when losing this year. That's what happens to great teams too (not saying we're great yet but the similarities are mounting up).
I love watching us playing away from home and dominating possession. Am I alone in noticing this and just loving the feeling? People who moan about '85 and before don't think it's good enough but I wonder how they don't recognize that feeling coming back? Is it because it's happened slowly? There aren't a lot of teams left in the league who can stop us from controlling the game. We may not have a degree from the school of science these days but we're at least taking night classes. We have a foot in the door.
During our losing streak I posted a thread about how I didn't think we were playing badly. Obviously I don't enjoy watching us lose but the football wasn't bad. Remember how we all got carried away with ourselves pre-season? I don't think we should give up on that quite yet. I'm going to enjoy our watching our team try anyway.
