Okay they beat city.. all seems lost - The fires of Mordor are well and truly ignited but...
My mind wandered back today to a pleasant Spring day in 1993 - I was attending a football match at Haig Avenue half-watching my home town team beat Barrow courtesy of Leroy Dove and half listening on my Sashio Walkman to us playing 'Boro and preki guaranteeing us top flight football.
Also that day Man U were playing Sheffield Wednesday in a game crucial to their first title in 27 years (sound familiar ?) they were losing which was good as I had despised them since norman whiteside had denied us the treble in '85.
Then shock horror Steve Bruce levelled and in stoppage time (soon to be renamed Fergie-time) he scored again - cue the famous brian kidd knee skids .. and that was it - in the bag etc, etc they had done it.
I remember walking off home in the foulest of moods - why ?
Not because I could of got 20-1 on a preki winner -
Not because Northern premier league football is ultimately gash..
No - I'll tell you why because I knew this was a beginning ,something big was happening that was going to be here for a while - a sea change.
The rest unfortunately is history...
Today I watched another expensively created/paid team beat another expensively created/paid team and the best thing is I know in my footballing heart this victorious team is an anomaly.
I know football has changed in twenty years, but these aren't here for the long run - I believe we Everton with our fantastic young players a bit of luck and shrewdness from our top drawer manager have a better shout of a new dynasty - really do.
So sleep well in your beds tonight and COYB !!!
Thoughts ??
