Alan Whittle

Player Valuation: £70m

Lovely story about Huyton winning the English Schools Trophy in 1971. Peter Reid was in the team and the Final was a two legged affair with the home leg at Goodison. They were coached by Alan Bleasdale.
I was drawn to this as my best mate at the time played for Aldershot Boys who reached the 5th Round before losing to Neath. They went on to be beaten by Barking in the QF who themselves were knocked out by Huyton in the SF stage. The Aldershot lads were a really good side who had been together since the U11 stage. We all thought some of them would make it as Pro's. Sad to say I ended up playing against some of them in local league football just a few years later. (They were still much better than me though!)

….i played against Huyton Boys the following year so i just missed this team. The team i played against was also very good, they got knocked out of the English Trophy in the latter stages by Blackpool. That tie became quite high profile, it went to 4 or 5 replays before Blackpool knocked them out. We beat Blackpool in the quarter final.

i think Reid’s team had a defender called Frank Pimblett who was very highly rated and went to Villa but it didn’t work out.
