One thing AI is very good for is the remastering or upscaling of old video, such as this.

I sourced a fella online who specialises in AI upscales of World Cup and Euro matches from the past and have bought a trove of such treasure from him going back to the 1970s. Incredible to watch the old classic matches as if they were filmed this decade. You almost feel like you are among the legends as you watch.

I watched most of it last night (have about half an hour remaining of it), and it was actually kind of unsettling for a while how much it looks like it was just filmed over the past year or two. For one, the people who passed a decade or more ago, and for another, seeing the sort of stock "people walking outside Goodison on matchday" shots about 10 times before realising they were from about 20 years ago. Then there are the interview clips with Reidy: Because he's active on social media and goes the game, we see a lot of him as he is right now, and wow in the interview he looks like he just finished up as a player but with a video quality that was not really available anytime near his retirement.

That said, it looks incredible and I'm thankful to the posters who pointed it out to all of us. Hoping to see a ton of old match upscales posted in the coming decade as this stuff gets more efficient. I'm in absolute agreement with your statement about this being one thing AI is actually good at. It's weird how the combination of color quality and clarity have basically wired my brain (assuming this is common but have never spoken about this with others and don't want to assume) to subconsciously and immediately determine when a video was taken, within about 5-10 years precision, but I'm happy for that wiring to get redone. This application of the technology will probably be great for a lot of us feeling comfort and joy as we age.

This is exactly it. I was watching 1978 World Cup games recently and it struck me that these AI upscales are giving me a viewing experience that is superior to what people actually saw live at the time. We watched games on colour TVs that were good for their time, but very often reception was iffy, grainy, or snowy with plenty of ghosting. This was standard.

I was watching Spain v Yugoslavia from 1982 when Arconada, the Spanish goalkeeper, bowled the ball out to a defender and I thought he was going to hit me with it, so vivid was he. Like you, I think we are wired from those days to expect a lack of detail - so it is definitely an eye-opening experience when a well-preserved VHS of the time is upscaled in this manner with new technology.

The Howard documentary had me wondering when it was made, such was the sheen from it. As you say, Reidy looked a young buck - and we're used to seeing him with Grecian 2000 in grainyvision.
