Age Group Discrimination

WOW! So that explains it.
Just like James Lawrence my birthday is August 22nd.
Who knew that it was this that stopped me becoming an international class footballer? lol

Seriously though, he does have a bit of a point. Because of my birth date I was always one of the youngest in my year at school. I sat my 11 plus at the age of 10 and left school at the age of 14.

Then you may well have been in a class who had birthdays in early September and almost a year older than you.

It’s an interesting one that often comes up in the Youth Thread as the Academy year starts 1st September but the international age group year is 1st January, so sometimes a kid is one of the oldest in his Academy year but youngest in his International year . Often the kids born January to August are ahead in Internationals at 17-20 as they have an extra year of full time Academy training compared to Sep - December kids in same international year. But the Sept-Dec kids can stand out in their Academy year as they are the oldest, hope that makes sense!
Theres good current examples in our u18s where two of the brightest prospects Lewis Dobbin and Tyler Onyango have played regularly for England u15/16/17s alongside current 16 year old schoolboy Reece Welch who will likely join us in July , all things being normal . If Welch had been born a month earlier he’d have benefitted from full time Academy training, but equally he’s got two full years ahead of him as one of the oldest in his year and a good chance to prove himself.

Lescott, Cleverly, Jags, Ashley Williams, also Roy Keane, Shearer and loads more all born in August...

Apparently, if he could sign anyone at all for Cardiff and money was no object, Vincent Tan would likely choose Bernard (b. 8/9/92) over, say, a prime Arjen Robben, simply because eight is a lucky number in his culture.

Absolutely batty.... who coincidentally wore 8 when missing his penalty against Argentina. In 1998 Hmmm....
