How would you react if an Everton legend had very questionable views?

Cancel the player?

This question is simple but how would you react if an Everton Legend such as Cahill, Baines, Jagielka, etc came out with these sort of views and being anti-establishment? Would you cancel the player? Or still support the player to the hilt because they provided you entertainment on the football field?
Am I the only one that thinks it very questionable that Cahill, Baines and Jagielka are being considered Everton legends?

Everybody should have their own opinion and should be allowed to vocalise it. Just because somebody is in the public eye (celebrities) does not mean they are necessarily experts, intelligent, insightful, or should be a leader of thought. It baffles me why so many people are bothered what celebrities think or say- most often a celebrity skill set is very narrow - can they play a game well; can they sing a bland pop song with the aid if autotune while wobbling their breast in a skimpy outfit; can the remember a few lines of dialogue and play pretend in front of a camera - I'd really rather our top scientists, philosophers and surgeons were given this cult following.

Equally in my non-expert opinion I might disagree with them and their views. Does it affect how well they can boot a football? No. Does it affect whether I like or respect them? Maybe. Does my liking or respecting them have any influence on whether they should play for the club I follow? No.

So long as they don't break the law of the land laid down by our elected representatives* I don't give a flying fig of celebrity opinion.

*theoretical obviously- as if they ever represent the electorate for a microsecond ffs!

People used to just agree to disagree, now you need to be ostracised and put in the pariah box.

You call that music? You can't even dance to it etc etc etc

That's not actually true and "cancel culture" is older than anyone posting on here. And it took forms a lot harsher than getting binned off a cushy role at a football club or losing TV work. Genuine ostracisation and not the hysteria laden take that some have on a celeb being criticised or losing work for saying or doing something daft.

If a club employs someone to represent them, as Southampton did with MLT, and that person then comes out and states idiotic stuff then they're more than free to decide that person probably isn't the best to represent them. It's a simple equation of the perceived benefits their role brings against the perceived harm their choice of public statements make.

It's not necessarily about caring what a celebrity thinks, it's about caring whether someone with a platform to speak to the masses and potentially influence them is saying something which could be harmful to society.

But who is to judge that? And as soon as you take on the role of judge might the response be to guillotine that freedom of expression?
