How to 'save' the FA Cup?

I love the Cup, it is brilliant. I started watching us as a youngster in 1997, and well, the magic was always there, the excitement of only just winning the cup, and the hunger to get back to Wembley was always apparent on the fans faces, and it really did lift the gloom, even though we'd always end up going out. I remember the sheer excitement of the 1999-2000 run, and Max-Moore scoring, and the place going mental. It really did brighten up a dull moment.

I remember falling out of love when we kept on drawing Chelsea or United, andknowing Moyes would prefer the league, but that 2009 run was magical, Liverpool, Villa, United and Boro all dusted down before losing to Chelsea. I think certain historical clubs like Everton, the cup will always be a magical thing, and the 2012,2013 runs show that.

But being honest, there's a lot of smaller clubs, who are there or there abouts in the Championship, Premier League like Wigan, Millwall or plain crap clubs like Blackburn, who struggle to muster up 6,000 for the cup, whereas the grand historic clubs like Everton, Spurs, Liverpool and so forth really do take the cup to it's heart.

I think the semi finals at Wembley is a disgrace imho. It really does take the gloss off what getting to the final is about imo. When we got to the Semi's in 2009, a lot of the younger blues (myself included), had never seen Everton at Wembley, although i'd been before to see St. Helens, the day was amazing, seeing the blues win and everything, but then we had to go back a month later, it really took the edge off the final for me. Had a great day, but the magic of getting back to wembley for the first time in 14 years, well that'd been and gone.

As for how it frustrates me, i'll use Pompey as the example, they've won at Wembley 3 times, yet only ever won one trophy there, how can that be fair? There's no magic in that.

Very simple how to save the F.A cup, Stick the 4th champions league spot on the end of it as a much bigger prize. Stick the other europa spot on the 4th place in the league and watch the competition fly.

What this would do is increase the incentive to win the thing, and any cup upsets would be fantastic. imagine if it was like that now, Chelsea/City/Kopites/Arsenal/Everton all vying for that top 3 place in the league which also makes winning the league more competitive at the same time. Teams going for the cup as a means to getting into the promised land, and right now the draw would be a sickener for the top 2 ties. Plus the likes of charlton/preston/sheffield united/wednesday would be in with a shout of potentially saving their clubs with the revenue it would bring if they could somehow get past that qualifying round.

It would solve the financial crisis in the lower leagues if they could put a cup run together and the worry of non elite teams getting in that way would be small due to the fact generally the big teams win.

ive been saying this for awhile. Whats the point of the 4th best team in the "Champions League" when they havent won anything? At least the FA cup winner would be winners of SOMETHING.

...what's the point of the third best team in the "Champions League" ??

FA Cup final winners should play fourth place in a direct playoff for the CL place imo. If they lose then they get a place in the Europa League as a consolation.

The degree to which people worry about the semantics of *Champions* League really amazes me. Must be bloody exhausting to take everything so literally. Most people want to watch the best clubs play against each other -- if anything you could argue it needs *less* Champions (we're a better team than all but maybe 6 or 7 champions) to improve the quality of play. Change the name if you like; or just shut up about it because it's been that way for ages now FFS ... the battle is lost. Move on. They aren't all champions. Oh think of the children.

Most people in this thread have made some suggestions (none of which IMO would change anything) but a lot of people have said the magic isn't gone for them. I think it's in no small part a media creation: "things were better in my day ... when people actually bought newspapers." Nostalgia is a powerful drug.

This makes a lot of sense. Too much sense.

The Europa League has followed suit, and i think if it goes successfully, The FA will have to look at it.

To be honest the football factory got my interest in the draws right up again. Look forward to Sunday tea time every time we are in it now.
