Tbf even I thought gay sex was still 18. Thinking about it it was a little weird one was 16 and one was 18. Surely sex is sex. Unless they were thinking you might have to legally be an adult (18) to be sure of your sexuality.

It was just homophobia, I think.

When they leagalised sodomy they could only get it through for 21s and older (and only in england and wales, the rest of the UK were still banning any homosexual sex between men well into the 80s and 90s). Because there is this myth of homosexuals corrupting the youth.

In the 90s they tried to force through a law that saw it go to 16 like hetrosexuals but it was rejected. 18 was the compromise vote. The house of lords kept kicking anything truly equal back.

It only came down to 16 when Europe got involved and so parliment were forced to overrule the house of lords.

Well now there's equality it can only be a good thing. Always thought it was a strange one. Although personally (putting my sensible head on now I'm passed that age) I think the legal limit for all sexual encounters should be 18.
