He is a proper rock star there are not many left, his peers pale in comparison
personally i find most of his stuff un listenable but there has been some gems throughout his career

Didn't he get involved in some sort of neo-fascist leafleting campaign in London a few years back?

Kind of sums up my thoughts that. Some superb stuff, but some utter garbage.
 

Truly great artist - hard to say how influential he was and is because you just run out of superlatives. The inventor of pop music.

God must rest, though - fair to say he downed tools in 1980 and never really picked them up again in a serious way.
