Back before I could commit to a season ticket I had one and got into all the major games that season, including the Derby

Always worth having a look at the Caribou/FA Cup games.
Always managed to get decent tickets in the stand of my choice for these games. Appreciate the mid week Caribou Cup games wont be ideal travelling up from Somerset but you should make a trip of it as Liverpool is a city is great to spend some time in. (PS I don't live there so not biased at all).

You can try the membership scheme, which gives you one day before general sale to buy tickets. They will almost certainly be some form of restricted view. I got some seats with excellent views on stubhub.

For the majority of games bar 2 or 3 you will get excellent tickets on stub hub.
