Home Security - Is CCTV worth it?

Need a new alarm system at home. Is it worth getting cctv?

I've been quoted £500+ for 2 vibration sensors, Outside siren, 3 x movement sensors, keypad and a door sensor. Seems like a good price to be fair, mobile app to control it all etc.

But I'm wondering given we're updating it all, whether it's worth adding CCTV as well? For 2 outside good quality cameras (capable of zooming in to see reg plates or faces) and the recorder/app etc. it's another £500.

I've been struggling to get a decent quote to be fair bar the above, most systems appear to come with monthly maintenance charges which I was hoping to avoid if possible.

Anyone got any advice, or experience with similar?

Security cameras are definitely worth having but only if they give a good enough picture in both daylight and at night to be able to recognise a person. Also, make sure the cameras are out of reach of people so they can't be covered or broken.
5k cameras front and back should do the trick.

Hi mate.

I used to work for a solicitors (claims that sort of thing ) and CCTV images where part and parcel of my job.

Cheap CCTV is a waste of time and money, as unless it’s cracking the flags, daytime and the subject isn’t far away, it’s next to useless.

If you can afford it, I’d go for the full package - £1000 - which is a very good price.

You need to be able to store any images, should you need them and also it needs to be able to record clearly during night time ( the cheap ones won’t ).

Most domestic burglaries happen during the day, but most burglaries where cars are nicked happen of a night.

You get what you pay for I’m afraid.

The best security system is big angry dog !

I've not been in the industry for a while now,but the best system you can get is a basic one but with lots of high decibel sound bombs. If you can find a friendly installer there are some available to those in the know that will make your ears bleed. Tends to put your average scally off rooting around for long in your sock draw.

Cheers mate. He showed me the cameras and they did appear to be good quality, and he said the same of a night.

We've got a dog but she's almost mute, very rarely barks at anything. Uses her paw instead of her voice, she'd need a panic button.

A lot of CCTV images look good on the screen, but when you try to print off an image, you lose a load of definition with the cheap ones and that`s when the quality comes into play.

There`s a lot of blag artists out there, who`ll try and fob you off with rubbish and at the same time, there`s a lot of high end stuff that`s wildly overpriced or you end up locked into a maintenance contract.

I'd rather have the CCTV then then sensors, wont something like a bird or a cat walking along the wall trigger the sensor? It will end up going off all the time.
CCTV is a visual thing, if people can see it maybe it will encourage the local kopite to go rob another house were they wont end up on YouTube

Pointless unless you have a quality HD system that can provide a good picture in the dark.
The majority of the scum going burgling more often wear a hoodie or face covering so it’s hard to identify the person anyway.

People seem to think that just because there is CCTV that means the police will automatically solve the crime.

It doesn’t work like that in the real world. If your camera only gives an image of half a pixel nobody is identifying anyone.

See I think its better to be a deterant, see a camera, make them think about going somewhere else.

Also I see people above mentioned print quality, dont forget any pictures from CCTV will mostly be looked at on a device, often a phone, so I dosent need to be print quality

Recently bought Euficam Pro 2 cameras (and doorbell), liked them as they dont require a companion subscription. They are wireless and have an inbuilt anti tamper alarm @ 110db iirc. 2k resolution (unless used with Apple secure video which can only currently deal with 1080), IP67, really easy to install and operate.
They are pretty decent but any domestic CCTV system isn’t going to that spectacular, at night especially. Like any sort of security system your really only buying a deterrent that needs to be very clear to potential burglars that your gaff is less attractive to break into than another nearby place.
Not the most intelligent cameras on the market but they do have configurable zones and a degree on onboard AI for human dectection should you choose to only detect humans rather than any movement.
I’d say they are worth while, as a deterrent an reassurance, but the bottom line is if some determined enough they are coming in.
