The KNVB has introduced a new scheme that will see players be forced to sit out 10 minutes if they pick up a caution. The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) is introducing a new scheme that will see a yellow card in the amateur game punished by a 10-minute spell on the sidelines. The plans, which are to be brought in next season, will see players leave the pitch if they pick up a booking and return soon after, similar to the ‘sin bin’ in Rugby League, Rugby Union and Ice Hockey. Anton Binnenmars, director of amateur football at the KNVB, said the manslaughter of linesman Richard Nieuwenhuizen at the hands of three players at a local match in December 2012, prompted the plans. “After the sad events on December 2, it became clear for the football world and the society in general that we needed to do something,” Binnenmars told reporters. “We have to take stronger measures. Violence does not belong on the pitch.”

Seems like a decent idea to me.

Was watching ice hockey last night, the 3 year old asked me why there was a guy sitting in a little box.

Me: "Well, he got a penalty."
Son: "Oh. What's a penalty?"
Me: "Well, he tripped him."
Son: "Oh, well I'm not going to trip anyone cause I don't want to be stuck in that box."

At any rate, the thing about cautions these days is that 1. referees are very quick to give them and 2. Players are ambivalent about getting one. So maybe this solves the second problem, but I think referees would be much less likely to give out a deserved yellow card if it meant 10 minutes off the pitch.

Hmm. Not sure it would work in practice. I mean, you could have a game with 9v7 at times.

They use it over here in indoor games, it can change the balance of a game way too much. Also this 10 minutes seems excessive as its like having a man sent off for 1/9th of the game, imagine if it happen 10 minutes before the end of the game. Plus most derby games, especially ours would end up 5-a-side, no goalies , and we'd have to start coming up with rules about shooting inside the area to make it fair.

Great in principle but in the end it would be just another rule the reffs make mistakes over by erring too much one way or the other...and will result in....right, both of you in the sin bin

Swerve all this sin bin business, what you want is the ref to lay down some ground rules and let the lads batter eachother like in Hockey, i want to see Moyes vs Mancini and also Kolorov vs Ivanovic which i reckon would outlast the actual match.

just don't think it would work in the current game. it's different to rugby where yellows are less frequent and only relate to serious offences. i don't think the standard of refereeing around the world at this moment in time could handle it tbh. 5 mins instead of 10 would have to be option as well, 10 is way too long.

but i mean people get booked for taking their shirt off or "over celebrating" a really important goal

Would be too easy for the referees to cheat imo.

Imagine Everton vs United, last game of the season and United need to win. It's at Old Trafford but we're holding out 0-0 but 10 minutes left to play.

What could be easier for the referee than to pull out a couple of yellows for our team and virtually ensure a United onslaught for the remainder of the game?

Easier than having to give a dodgy penalty or so.

Dont agree with people saying 'but games would end up 7v8'. Players would be more hesitent to do something that warrents a yellow card or sin-binning.

What would work hand in hand with this is referees actually having to give reasons for their decisions for either a)the whole of the stadium to hear, like in the NFL, or b ) Post-game reports that are available to everyone.

you mean like tackle? you would get loads of 50/50's where both men will go for it then look at eachother and say, nah it aint worth the risk. like goat says, nearly every foul these days is a yellow
