But you can just download that for free. With records/CD's you get a booklet etc, iTunes you get nothing to look at etc.

You get to give money to an artist you enjoy and so encourage them to make more.

A lot of people only listen to music digitally but want to do it legally so they can support the artists they like.

And this attitude is why the music industry is on it's arse.

I spend 50 quid or so a month on records (the artists get a bigger cut than d/l through iTunes), which is more than what most probably people spend on downloading music from iTunes so i still do my bit, i just don't get paying for downloads.

It's the attitude of not needing to pay for digital content i was referring to. Sooner or later all music will only be available digitally.

The reason you buy it is to support the artist who spent the time producing the music.

I remember the days of Brittania, a record company who never failed to send me the " album of the month" even if I had previously made it abundantly clear that I didn't want it, sending me a Cliff Richard album was the straw that broke the camel's back...and they loved calling on the debt collectors to recover the smallest of "debts". It was nice to see those turds go out of business.

I tend to download mostly dj mixes for free then seek out the tunes I like best on vinyl. I'll buy artists new records I like on vinyl if possible and I download hard to find/deleted/no official digital release stuff for free. iTunes is a binary turd and I won't have it on my PC.

Most stuff I buy second hand from discogs.com. That website is dangerous.

I feel it's spun a bit when the media say it's ALL down to digital. Plenty of peeps still buy vinyl (iirc sales have doubled year on year for past few), and there are quite a few people with quality systems that streamed/digital content just doesn't satisfy regarding quality.
Blockbuster lost my 200odd quid/year by being unresponsive and by investing in the pulp mainstream whilst neglecting the rest of its catalogue.
HMV was a laughing stock for yonks with its pricing policy.
