An independent panel of experts, chaired by the Bishop of Liverpool, James Jones, has spent 20 months examining 450,000 internal documents relating to Britain's worst sporting disaster.

On Wednesday, the panel will aim to deliver a definitive narrative into the events of 15 April 1989, when a fatal crush developed at the Leppings Lane end of the Sheffield stadium before an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

Sources say it will find "in favour" of the families and illustrate, in detail, the lengths to which South Yorkshire police orchestrated a "cover up" to hide their culpability by blaming the fans. The city hopes this will be the week that will finally clear the names of the supporters, who were maligned as drunk, ticketless and unruly, a portrayal perpetrated by police and articulated by the Sun newspaper under the headline: "The truth".

Lets hope the familys effected by that awful day find some peace tomorrow at last

If it helps put a cap on it for the families, that's all that counts. Hopefully those truly affected by that tragedy can find some solace from it.

I must say though that some of the hangers on around the families (the politicians and local celebs) who've made this into a Hilsborough industry turn my stomach.

Spot on mate

Hopefully tomorrow they can have some peace at last and move on with there lives

Am I mental in thinking if their were any seriously incriminating documents out there, they would have been destroyed by now?

Anyways, I hope that's not the case, obviously, and that closure can be brought once and for all.

There a few stories the families wouldnt want to get out as well here lads by the way. But I agree that on the whole, this should give some form of closure, not emotionally obviously, but justice wise.

It's disgusting that its took 23 years to get the truth.

But I hope now, that the senior police involved in the cover up are bricking it at the thought of being charged.

Im waiting for that odious ****, Kelvin Mckenzie to come crawling out from his rock.

Those Officers that altered their statements....

Stop Their Pensions with immediate effect, if still working then instant dismissal with no pension & all contributions lost.
Hit them back where it will hurt them, so that they'll think long and hard about it when they are at work in their late 70's.
And anyone else that was involved, be it Politician, Journalist etc.

This.

Additionally, if any of the 160+ statements that were tampered with by Police were given in the context of a criminal investigation, then the officers doing the tampering have broken the law. As such they should be arrested and brought before a Court to answer for their crimes.

I hope that the relatives of the dead have some small measure of solace as a result of today's events.

i hope this brings closure, but i dont think it will until someone is blamed. the police chief wont be blamed didnt he become chief of police of Merseyside, thats another kick in the teeth.

You dont know if these officers where told by there bosses to change statements,

The statements, amended or not, didn't kill a single person.
The Tony Blair dodgy Iraq dossier killed hundreds of thousands.
The guilty are those that took the wrong decisions on the day and those that caused the crush.....

I think this is the most important thing. Unfortunately I think that what will happen now will be voices to re-open everything, have more inquests, and it will drag out for another 23 years.

Every time one of these reports like Hillsborough or Bloody Sunday comes out there are profuse apologies from politicians and condemnations of the tragedies. But never is anything done to confront, never mind alter, the culture of arse-covering and self-preservation within organisations like the police or the army that necessitates reports like these. Bastards.
