Hillbillies

I was flicking through sky last night and came across a film called wrong turn 4. Basically it's a film about young people taking a wrong turn and some hillbillies killing them.

questions
1) is there still a lot of hillbilly communities in the USA Not a lot, but there are some. Usually in Appalachia or the DEEEP South.
2) are they deformed through generations of inbreeding Google "the Blue Fugates". Blue-skinned people in Appalachian Eastern Kentucky.
3) do they make their own moonshine Yes. Very much so. I knew a bunch of people at university who had grown up in the sticks, and they'd always bring it back from home. It's pretty nasty, but it's rocket fuel.
4) do they speak English or just grunt English, but really backwoods types can be hard to understand.
5) if you decided to go on an adventure trip rafting with you friends would they bum you. How pretty is your mouth?

.....

Isn't it an American term for 'country folk'?

Like Scouser is for us Liverpool folk.

Something like Cletus from the Simpsons (and I'm not knocking the Simpsons) probably doesn't do the image any good, but we weren't exactly highly offended by Harry Enfield were we? I don't remember being offended by it, and the McGann brother on it used to go in my nan's shop.

Pretty much. Most actual "hillbillies" are proud to be so.

Like cb said, they're mostly in the deep south or Appalachia (West Virginia). They're generally decent folk who just happen to have a strong independent streak and can be set in their ways. They probably do the majority of moonshining (but not all of it) and that crap will light a fire in your belly like you wouldn't believe, light everything else up on the way down, too.

And cb, I lol'd at the 'How pretty is your mouth'.

As has been said Hillbillies are a very specific type from West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, Western North Carolina etc. Basically Appalachia (look at a map of the Appalachian mountains and it's the people who live on either side. This term also applies to people nearer me in the Ozark region of Missouri and Arkansas.

This guy was a famous moonshiner and hillbilly http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvin_Sutton. Been several documentaries done about "Popcorn" Sutton.

I may very probably be wrong but isnt the term 'hillbillies' akin to 'pikies' here in jolly old Britain? If so isnt it a tad racialist. Didnt the show 'the beverly hillbillies' end its run stateside around the sameish time as 'the black and white minstrel show' was also rightly canned?
Just curious.

I doubt some guy living in the sticks wrestling crocodiles and bumming 20 stone mutants is gonna be offended being called a hillbilly
