I was flicking through sky last night and came across a film called wrong turn 4. Basically it's a film about young people taking a wrong turn and some hillbillies killing them.

questions
1) is there still a lot of hillbilly communities in the USA
2) are they deformed through generations of inbreeding
3) do they make their own moonshine
4) do they speak English or just grunt
5) if you decided to go on an adventure trip rafting with you friends would they bum you.

They're all what the Yanks call Scotch-Irish and therefore have a natural tendency toward inbreeding and killing.

Theres a few programmes about them on nat geo. Hillbilly hand fishin and Moonshiners. Funny stuff! And yes they'd bum yer head off given a chance!

Which is why I've just booked a week s/c in south Carolina!

Why?

You work in Warrington dont you?

I may very probably be wrong but isnt the term 'hillbillies' akin to 'pikies' here in jolly old Britain? If so isnt it a tad racialist. Didnt the show 'the beverly hillbillies' end its run stateside around the sameish time as 'the black and white minstrel show' was also rightly canned?
Just curious.

There was also a film titled "The Beverly Hillbillies" that came out in 1993.
I don't think it's racist and neither does Hollywood. Especially Mel Gibson.

Isn't it an American term for 'country folk'?

Like Scouser is for us Liverpool folk.

Something like Cletus from the Simpsons (and I'm not knocking the Simpsons) probably doesn't do the image any good, but we weren't exactly highly offended by Harry Enfield were we? I don't remember being offended by it, and the McGann brother on it used to go in my nan's shop.
