Have you ever...

Have you ever seen Everton fans favourite player play against anyone besides Everton?

After doing a bit of research it seems that Yarmolenko is now the 7th most popular word used in the Everton forum for the last 12 months, behind obvious ones like Everton, Draw, Delofeu and Texans and a few others.

So I did a bit more digging and found that before February this year this word had never been uttered in the forum before it's suddenly burst onto the scene as some kind of zeitgeist. There was a distinct down turn in its usage from late March to mid May but a clear and rapid rise over the summer months and it hit a yearly high in August.

Anyway I'd just thought with it being so popular now how many of you have seen this Yarmolenko thing live outside of a two week period in March this year?
This is a common phenomenon known as the 'Adversus' effect.
For more on this refer to the book "Transfer window hype for dummies", right after the chapter on songwriting.

All true, on the other hand what's the effect called that describes the people who think that no one has ever seen any game or player outside the premiership until a player from that team is linked with Everton?

"have you got FIFA lad".
also known sometimes as "played footie manager have ya"

I don't have enough time to pay my bills (and no I can't do it now!) let alone be a professional football scout. So no I hadn't heard of him until Europa and yes I then instantly wanted him a lot. Is it the contention of some that this somehow is less valid then if I'd followed him since he turned 16?

I'm not sure how this is any different than me wanting to see a new movie after I see the trailer -- sure I could have read the trade sheets and found out when they optioned the book, or when they assembled producers, or when they hired a director, cast and writers etc so I knew about the movie LONG before it came out -- but I didn't because I have other things to do. (I did used to read Hollywood trade papers when I was a teenager though for some reason ... I'm weird.)

Actual managers who get paid millions often sign players who turn out to be utterly crap.

So if someone here wants to vomit out the name of whomever is good on FM or FIFA quite frankly I don't mind that at all. A lot of people paid money to work in the game make horrible mistakes all the time -- I'm not entirely convinced FM wouldn't be a better scout for most teams than their current scouts.

Hadn't really heard much about Stones before he signed for us either.

Matter of fact I just read an article (Telegraph maybe got me with some click bait after that fab four article) contending that not knowing anything about a player before he shows up is better than knowing about them ahead of time. Not sure I agree but some people consider that an advantage.

I wish I had the time to get weirdly obsessed with FM again and know all these players ahead of time. Then go watch their YouTube highlights and follow their Twitters etc. Well not the Twitter part. Still.

Just because I didn't have the time to realize Yarm was a great player before last season doesn't mean he isn't really a great player. Everything he did over the last 5 years is still there for me to see; the fact I didn't personally watch it all in real-time isn't really a significant variable in assessing if he's any good or not for Everton or how excited I should be about signing him.
