Might just be my experience, but you can't hear a customer when you put them on hold. Your line goes off too. Depends what system the call centre is using I guess

I was trying to change my address on my car insurance as I had used my old one by accident (atatched to my gocompare account when logged in I forgot to update it) insurance cert got delivered to old address this is how I found out, whilst on hold I talked about the fact id had a slight bump, when the lad came back on the line he fobbed me off sayin system wouldnt update an that he would call me 2moz, he did say i was stil insured and the not had been made against my account.

would seem that way, but I typed my op into google an almost all the answers are sayin that they cant hear me if on hold listening to music but they can if im muted, which they shouldnt do
Could be a tough lesson though if the guy, who's car has a slight scuff on it, won't go through insurance, and they won't pay an it becomes a police matter.I think they've been listening mate as that was a brush off. Ah well you'll know for next time.
The insurance companies are unbelievable snakes. There needs to be tighter legislation. The business is a rip off for many.
I think the FSA are really trying to crack down on them at the moment with stricter rules. You can always go to the financial ombudsman too if you think there's been any foul play

I run a call centre and we use the Mitel phone system and as Mikey said it works in two ways
A: We can mute the call which will just go quiet at your end and we can hear what your saying
B: We can put you on hold, you will hear hold music and we cant hear what your saying.
