Player Valuation: £150m
My daughter in Scotland just before Christmas smelt her clutch buning badly jus as she was parking up.
I told her to get estimates , but her local Machanic in the new year was busy and told her about this great guy 1/2 a mile down the road was a clutch specialist .......
She just about got her car there - he wanted £650 ......
My daughter asked him for a better price he verbally agreed £ 450 as long as he could check it out ......
That night she received a text he had dropped the gearbox & and it was now £675
She telephoned around to find the the going rate for a new clutch was £ 4-500 so she organised her brakedown firm wh agreed to pick her car up and get the job somewhere else which they agreed as she was covered .....
The breakdown company went there he refused to hand the car over unless my daughter paid him £150 plus vat and he would throw the gearbox on the backseat .....
She tephoned the police stating it was extortion of money as he advertised free estimates .......they stated it was extortion but out of their hands ....
She then went to the trade standards who are going to investigate the matter ...
He now also wants to be paid in cash no card....
The car is now going to be picked up tommorow by the brake down firm and taken to Kwick fit for a new clutch for £475
I have told her to do this record him on her telphone and the take him to the small claim court on her car legal cover ...
What a Barstwered he really is ....
In all my life I have never heard of anything like this ?

Well he does deserve to be paid something for the work he has done.

Sorry to say probably playing on a woman that robbing get ,got to say quick fit are usually on the high end of quotes, even they are couple of hundred cheaper. Hope she doesn't drop the complaint its blatant robbery a disgrace to their trade .

I used to work in a shop fixing lawnmowers, the amount of timewasters we dealt with who after spending hours stripping engines said "nar its ok" was unreal, in the end we introduced a fixed fee of 13.50 which people had to pay before we even looked at them, that was 25 years ago now.

So yeah, if people spend time looking at your car, you pay them.

Clearly the fella is a cowboy, but the game stay the game.

As she’s found out Joey, a verbal agreement is worth nothing and he’ll just deny it anyway.

He’s dropped the box out of the car, so that’s where the £150 comes from.

Have you thought of dumping a mountain of dead frogs and Dyson parts outside the garage doors ?

Save yourself the hassle, do not try to mess with the mechanics. They can do what they like to your vehicle while they have got it. They could drop a turd down the back seat and you would not know about it until it is too late.

Legally, an estimate wouldn't really bind the garage into the fee and there will be no proof of the 'verbal agreement' if it wasn't witnessed.

Unless you state that you're not willing to pay for anything beyond what's agreed, they can usually charge you for more than they've estimated.

They might also claim they've carried out a service that hasn't been paid for.

If you've got the car back without any payment, I'd consider leaving it at that.

You are within your rights to only pay a 'reasonable price' if you only agreed an estimate and have been charged extra (consumer rights act) but it's subjective what is a reasonable price (so get another estimate/quote from somewhere).

If they wont release the car, pay the money but explicitly tell them you're 'paying under protest' and you can try and get it back later.
